If Rock and Roll was supposed to be noisy then people wouldn't bother with SSL G Series desks/channels, or noise-gates, high-end D/A-A/D converters, or humbuckers, or decent guitar leads, or properly planned studio wiring, or balanced conections etc.

If I want hiss then I want to choose the hiss; Guitar Rig/Combos gives you the hiss whether you want it or not.

Where does the hiss come from? I would have thought that in theory a VST with no input should be silent, regardless of the gain-setting?

Strange.

have u tried putting a gate on guitar rig, or LP filter of some sort? maybe try turning down the air setting on GI. Or Maybe its just your guitar pickups are noisy. By the way id be interested to find out what guitars have people found to work well with this plugin. Im using an epiphone SG custom.

I have to admit, saddlemire, that was my first reaction when reading CR's post. But he's right after all. It's a noisy piece of crap. I'm using a Yamaha Pacifica with a Seymour Duncan Lil '59 humbucker, no fluorescent lights or CRT monitors turned on, a pretty good planet waves cable, and an ART Studio V3 pre-amp OR the direct box function of the GDI21. No matter what, it was noisy and crappy.

By comparison, Green Machine Amp II, on high gain settings was not. My GDI21 in amp sim mode, was not. ;) The Simulanalog JCM900 was not as noisy, either.

They've definitely effed something up.

A gate is a band-aid solution, and not one I care to use for most things. I like to use gates as an effect (sharpen up nu-metal riffs) but never or rarely to compensate for noise, despite the fact that noise masking is its very intended purpose. Gates = suxorz.

True that, and not only that but the hiss will still be present in the signal along-side your guitar signal when the gate isn't active. Yeah, I don't want hiss in moments that lack input signal, but I also don't want hiss when there is input.

I'm pretty sure that Hendrix et al had slightly more going on than guitar signal + hiss...

:hihi:

Hm, I shall finally give those demos a try.

Gregs signal path seems to be pretty much OK to me (high impendance suitable without adding much, if anything), so if the Plexi model is indeed noisy there must be something wrong. Original Plexis are rather quiet, btw, even when being cranked.

Anyways, talking about noisy amp simulators - if you ever get a chance to try out Logics Guitar Amp "Pro", you'll be laughing... if it wasn't that sad. People knowing me will also know that I just love the plugin quality delivered by Logics internal ones, but that one has got to be a joke at best.

Those who can do maths and those who can't.

The demos are good, but I would pay 80 bucks for all three, not a piece. I can get just as good a sound out of MDA combo, and my Jstation is still way better.

Actually, i'm a little shocked at the price of all the NI guitar stuff, although the sound quality (at least of GuitarRig) is impeccable, as is the implementation - at least in the demo. As someone pointed out, i could conceivably buy one of the REAL amps for the price of the software. Still, if you want a Ferrarri, you gotta pay for a Ferrarri; no one's going to sell it to you for the price of a Toyota.
It's better to burn out...than it is to um..to um...well, something, anyway...

Except that they're not even 'impeccable'. ;) All subjective.

Damn straight they aren't.

Unless by 'impeccable' he means 'crappy'...

Being an old school guitar hacker ("I don't PLAY guitar, I just whack on it until something I like comes out..." P Townshend, supposedly), I can say with some (little) authority that GuitarRig is everything I've ever wanted in a modeler. Except for the price, of course.
