What do you guys use for auditioning samples? I find myself having tons of unsorted samples spread throughout various folders and using windows media player isn't really the best solution. I feel it would be nice to have something that would make it a bit easier to listen to a sample (this mainly concerns one-shot drum sounds and loops btw) and then put it in an appropriate folder.

I use the autoplay option in the browsing dialog in whatever program I'm using at the time - cool edit or Reason or whatever. I agree that media player or winamp aren't good for that...

Download TackyBrowser + SAVIHost :
http://subminimal.org/tools.php
http://www.hermannseib.com/english/savihost.htm
- put the dll file of TackyBrowser in the SAVIHost folder
- rename SaviHost.exe to tackybrowser.exe
- you have now a nice audio file browser software with audition of short files (it loads the samples in RAM)

Loophorse is shaping up nicely, lets you audition and create a list of samples then copy them in one swoop. Dead handy for auditioning/plundering sample CDs.

Tracker V3 is the app I've used for a while though, more a genereal purpose Explorer replacement but has good preview facilities.

Thanks for the tips, loophorse looks neat and that thing about tackybrowser seems like a good idea too. I'll be looking into both of these.

Loophorse is a joy to use, great tool, free, etc... .. .

anyone know if JZ's Loophorse has surpassed Sample Catalog yet? does it play 24 or 32 bit files? can you categorize the files? i see it has a bpm detector now... hmm, maybe its time to start using both.

i noticed it was pasted onto a recent FM disc.

Loophorse is a "must", the perfect tool, I love it. If I wouldn´t have Loophorse and my two eyes, I wouldn´t see a thing !

Post

CC4 In short, Loophorse is an app for auditioning files, not for cataloguing, hence it doesn't sport features such as categorizing.

Good point about 24/32 playback though.

The developer is a nice bloke and open to suggestions :)

Sometimes Loophorse won´t read a certain sample and closes itself. Only a few times, don´t no why, but haven´t asked the developer either...

I use this utility called wavebrowser, basic but useful.

Indeed, that wavebrowser looks very nice. Going to try that one on those waves that close Loophorse and see if we can learn something.

Hi There
Sorry you are having probs with LoopHorse. What kind of sample are you auditioning? I know some MP3's with really corrupt headers can cause a freak out. I'd be interested to know what file type, rate etc is causing the problem. Maybe you could mail it to me.

Loophorse will work with 24bit files with supporting hardware. I'm still trying to find a way to get the software to emulate it for other sytems for 24 and 32.

I'm glad it's been of use to you guys.

JZ, I´m trying to find them. It was a Brush drumkit. When found, let you know.

I found it. It was no brushkit, but a rodkit. At the bottom of the "page" : www.akaipro.com/arc_kotw.html
