Why No Windows Alternative?

After spending most of the day on the phone to India, to no avail, I rub my bleary eyes and ask, " why are we all being held captive by this bogged down behemouth of a system!?" Why is there not an alternative to Windows that runs Windows Apps? Windows is sooo overloaded with crappy crap crap! I'm sure a lighter OS could really make a big difference in CPU performance and run Applications without the giant overlord snooping in all the time!
Sorry if this sounds disjointed and confused, but after a day of hearing bad english dialect on a spotty phone connection, my mind is in the same mode.....I just don't see why we can't have a free market when it comes to the PC world???

If only more people would code audio apps for linux/unix based systems
and BeOS!!!
Linux is a great power tool, its the most customizable OS it would be v.usefull to have audio apps run on it.
Oh and did i mention BeOS!!!
Get coding for BeOS!!!! Its the fastest OS i've had on my pc! If only the company didnt go bankrupt

wasnt BeOS orginally designed for multimedia purposes? then the company went south and the o/s sort of idled for a bit.. now its being worked on by yellowtab under the name 'zeta'
that said.. I think it needs a cakewalk or steinberg to step in and release a version of their host for it to really take off.. and vst support is a necessity ..but thats just me..

Yea i believe there are people working on a free version of beo's, but since they cant use any of the original code they have to write it all from scratch and jsut "copy" the OS...whats the point?!
Anywho, it would only take someone to write VST support and a minihost for BeOS to see if it would a good option..and then it would just take off.
Although you would need alot of drivers etc
