if I got a track like string, sound lush and soft and had a little ambiance, what can I do to make it dry and punchy(can cut through in a mix more easily)?

should I use a compressor? EQ? and how do I do that?

some one please help me.

thanks

Compressors & eq might work...

Use something akin to transient modulator from Sony Oxford, Waves Transient X, Samplitude AM-Pulse, or SPL's whatever it was called. Voxengo also has one which is rather good

I guess by the term "ambiance" you mean reverb? If so I don't think there's anything you can use to remove it. If possible, re-record the tracks with the FX turned off.

I'm guessing this is a midi string track? Selecting a different midi string sound would be easier. Otherwise, there is a way of removing ambiance called Mid Side processing - but only if it's stereo ambiance.

thanks for the reply.

I mean if there's a track, string or pad, sound
soft & wet, it suits the song, but I like to make it drier so it can sound more forward and won't cloud up the mix.

sorry for my bad english..."ambiance" or "ambient"???
:P

You could try out something like Digitalfishphones Dominion, but it won't do all that much of a great job on smoothly released sounds, as it'll actually cut away the release portion - and, for the matter, any sort of shaper will.
I'm with greendor on this. In case you're talking about a MIDI track, chose another patch or modify the existing one.

Depending on what you mean by "dry," try playing around with the stereo field.

what if it rains?

Try SonicWorx from www.prosoniq.net and it has a tool to remove reverb. It works well on some things, others.. not so. I think it is worth trying though, and it is free. Take a look. I have heard it even runs under sheepshaver on a PC.

Try out 'MS Balance', its part of the MS tools set of plugins.

It splits the mono (middle) and stereo (side) parts of the signal and lets you control the balance between the two.

If your mix is soaked in reverb it might help bring the focus back. Try pushing the stereo part of the mix down a few db.

you can get it here : http://mdsp.smartelectronix.com/mstools/

and its free... :)
