I currently have two EQs in my plugins folder. THe CM Studio Spin EQ and the LPGEq.

These are both great and do their job well.

What I am missing, though is an insert EQ for the mundane jobs like cutting out the sub-100Hz from a guitar track or adding a wee bit of top to he hats.

What I am looking for, therefore, is a minimal EQ, with extremely low CPU usage. I'm thinking of maybe a 2-band parametric at the most.

Any ideas people ? :-)

UAD-1 Pultec Pro is my EQ for everything

About a minimalist EQ, no idea.. But I'm astonished you don't have NyquistEQ installed. It's pretty much the only EQ I use.

Most of the time I use the good old Cakewalk ParametricEQ for such tasks.

cheers,
Chris

Agree, every thing passed through Pultec (I don't have "Pro" version, but is enough...) sounds amazing :D

And for more accurancy: Sonalksis SV-517 stereo EQ (native), for me better than Universal Audio's Cambridge (DSP powered).
Sonalksis is the best sounding EQ I've heard  is not properly free but it worth...

Why, you can't see the frequencies?

Because it's smooth and transparent as hell and has a nice intuitive means of drawing EQ curves... And you can figure out what frequencies are what with a bit of research :D Of course it would be nice to have numbers but I just rely on memory and my ears (foolishly on both counts, perhaps)... :hihi:

I recommend Sonalksis EQ. It's very versatile offering different EQ characteristics and you can also switch individual bands on/off to save CPU power.

Also I love its sound.

I guess for shaping EQ it's wonderful plug but in the mixing area is pretty useless (just my opinion).

I use Nyquist as well. When I use a parametric EQ I search with my ears for the band where it does the job anyway, and the advantage of seeing the actual frequency is marginal. With Nyquist I focus on what it sounds like, which is more useful than knowing the numbers... :)

edit: Also, with Nyquist I find myself subtracting more than I do with a graphic or even parametric EQ. For some reason... And my brain says that's not a bad idea. When my brain and my ears agree I'm happy.

Why? Surely its as useless/useful as your memory? I've learnt pretty much where each frequency band is.

Wave Arts TrackPlug. 32 tracks with TrackPlug on each. Hardly a sigh from cpu.

It might also depend on a working technic. I can not mix without seeing the bands.

My day-to-day EQ is the one that comes on each Mixer channel in FL Studio - it's an awesome little 3-band parametric graphical EQ. Since it's on every channel anyway, I use it, and it always does the job.

I don't know of anything like that in VST form, though. :( it's so diminutive and yet it's basically perfect... 3 bands is more than enough for most applications (it can do two roll-offs and a boost at the same time... what more do you need?)

Usually, I use navive ones -SParamEQ or the Sonar one- but if it has to be surgical, I use CurveEQ, which isn't exactly a "minimal" EQ.
