No you can't do that in Live 5 or any other application. When a clip is frozen, it's frozen, and you can't edit it

I don't think this will ever be an option. What you will be able to do in Live (but possibly not version 5...) is to reposition frozen clips within your arrangement, or trigger forzen clips live, without unfreezing them. That will be deeply cool when it comes 8)

[edit] The freeze in Live 5, as of the current beta, is already MORE flexible that that found in other hosts such as Tracktion/Cubase... the point is, Ableton plan to make it even better still!!

i dunno understand either....

When i read the live5 annoncement it reads so that you can cut and paste parts as the orginal non frozen files but when i read this here now and on the ableton forum it seems to not possible....

I dunno:)

Yep, confused too! I think this feature is a bit "work in progress" still

But overall, I have to say that Live 5 simply rocks! It is yet another major step forward, and I think it is very much in a class of its own now in terms of ease of use, innovation and sheer pleasure! Wow!

Definitely no need to keep any of the old-style linear/bloatware sequencers installed on this system!

except in sonar where you can freeze something - then copy and paste it alter its start and end points pan it use the volume on it - in fact you can do anything to a forzen file that you can do to a normal audio file - becuase that is what it is

one of those features i really want in my sequencer of choice
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

I know what you mean eric, that's why I didn't include Sonar on my list. I think that Sonar still has the most flexible freeze around... but once Ableton have implemented their freeze as its intended I think it may prove even more flexible that Sonar's.

Remember this is a "beta" version, and this is their first stab at implementing freeze. And it's already ahead of *most*. They are also not implementing freeze in a "me too" manner, but in an inovative way that will fit into Live's paradigm better. I think the feature is going to be awesome!

I was looking at the upgrade path...I noticed that when Live 5 becomes final, it will cost $169 to upgrade from V 1,2, and 3. I have V3 right now...but then if I order V4 for $119, I'll get V5 free (well, sort of).

I'm thinking of jumping in for a little "saving"...I haven't had a chance to use V4 yet...but from what I have been hearing here...V5 seems to be a "must-have" upgrade.

One question though, I know most of you guys are PC users...any Mac users out here?

Any news on the Midi side of things - in particular editing in the piano roll?

Flipper.
Two things I noticed straight away (not announced in the publicity blurb)...

1. You can listen to notes as you enter them (a major request for some, I know!) 8) . Simply activate a button at the top left of the piano roll to preview your editing as you go.

2. Quantise value is shown numerically in the bottom right of the piano roll.

Also - VERY important to me - you can now set a metronome count in before recording. At last! A small but very significant improvement :D
Hey headquest -- how about MIDI record res? anything inbetween 1/32 and none?

Do you mean "record quantise" values (in the edit menu)?

In Live 4 you could record quantisation to <none>, 1/4, 1/8, 1/8 triplets, 1/16, 1/16 triplets.

In Live 5 this is expanded to include options to recognise 1/8 + 1/8 triplets and 1/16 + 1/16 triplets. I've not tested how this works yet.

You can still record without quantisation and then edit up to values of 1/1024 (possibly further even?)

Is this what you meant?

Something pretty cool is actually kinda reason like...The ability to save device chains as presets. They have a bunch of Impulse kits in the beta that have all of the effects chained up as presets. Very cool idea because people can share those "combinator" like presets. I likes it :-)

Yeah, I like that too. Some of those kits they provided are really phat!

Can you also do this with VSTis and not just with the native Live plugs?

I recall hearing 'no' on that.
If you have requests for Korg VST features or changes, they are listening at https://support.korguser.net/hc/en-us/requests/new

I tried the freeze feature, its great i gues but I feel like its not saving that much CPU, I used it on a z3ta. Do you guys know if zeta still runs once in freeze mode. Is there more to freeze then just a rendered file?

I'll do some more tests...

braj is correct - "No", you can't include VST or VSTi in group devices.

It is however a very cool feature, and one reason for that is that...

...the new effects in Live 5 are simply awesome!

Now, I must confess (and I've not mentioned this here before :-o ) that I have had my doubts about the Abelton effects in the past. The Reverb in particular is, erm, an acquired taste, let's say!

Not so the new effects. All of them completely blow! Great stuff indeed, and also the new effects are particularly suited for "Device Groups" because they are, by nature, real sound manglers of one kind or another (especially the "saturator"... WOW!)
