First Ever Sampler...?

I was wondering... does any one know what the name of the first sampler to be developed was? And I don't mean the Mellotron. All I know is that it was invented in Australia (we rule) and it was huge, with like a monitor that showed the sound you recorded with spectral information etc. and a pretty big keyboard. I would like to research it, but without the name I'm finding it really difficult.

Although shrouded in myth, the quality of the Fairlight was pretty dodgy on occasions. And this was the first sample ever (or so I am led to believe).
As people gained more experience with the thing, sample quality did improve!

I think that mello tron tapes and optigan discs certainly qulify as earlier samples than the fairlight sample to be fair, but its still cool to see that the first fairlight samples exist.

Geoff Downes used one live with Yes. Anyone else seen a CMI used live on stage? Peter Gabriel, maybe?scamme wrote:I think you mean "Fairlight"

Mellotron was definitely much earlier than the Fairlight, but used analog tapes versus actual digital sampling per se.
I think the early Emu Emulators came out before the Fairlight, though?
