even though the ableton effects are more than great, I don't get how they could not implement vstis/ and vst fx in the device chain feature, what is exactly the point of that, especialy for ableton, I mean why on earth would they of all people do such a thing, why would they think it would go over well and what benefit could come from that.

Post

Well I'm sure they didn't think it was a "benefit" to not include vsts within the Device Groups :?

But Live's own effects are not open standard vsts. Plug-ins are implemented differently from Ableton's own devices, and obviously the way Device Groups currently work is based on the native format only.

Do you have the beta version? When you look at a device group in action it kinda makes more sense, I think

Post

headquest, have you found that the Rewire integration techniques with Reason 3.0 works any better/smoother then in version 4? (version 4's intergration is admittedly awesome!)

Post

Hi there,

Not done a lot of rewire testing in Live 5 yet (have you?) but I think the improvements in Live 5's MIDI sequencing will be useful in conjuntion with Reason. THe basic rewire routing paradigm remains as in version 4.

Post

PS @ stale bread:

Group Devices can include both MIDI and audio effects (as well as Live's three instruments). Again I'm not sure whether/how that would be replicated with VSTs in the picture (some vsts would definitely complain, I'm sure!)

I'm not participating in the beta, because im afraid it would slow my creative momentum (which is slow enough already) by becoming more interested in the new features then in making music, but really I'm more afraid of potential bugs. Is the beta process fairly painless?

Absolutely. So much so that I feel like a con-artist so far. I have spent quite a chunk of time with it, and so far haven't spotted a single bug or issue (other than the fact that the freeze doesn't work quite as I expected it to - see above).

So all my VSTs worked straight off, everything is very smooth. The CPU is lower than before. All sorts of extra goodies in the upgrade that the advertising blurb doesn't even mention (there's a whole thread listing many of these over on the Abes forum).

Go for it - if nothing more, you can test that it works 1] on your system (just in case) and 2] that it helps you be, erm, more productive

Post

i dunno i guess that i just thought that if cakewalk could do it then surely the abes could. I've got the beta but havn't installed it yet, finally getting the time to go over it a little tonight

In Project 5 you can Group devices the Chan is MidiFx->Arp->Instrument->Effects (these can be saved as presets for recall later.

Now these can be a combination of any of the Above so you could just have MidiFX->Instrument or an Instrument->Fx chain etc ...

Also you aren't limited to the DXi's that come with P5 . Once you've scanned your VST directory with the DX warpper any VSTi/ DXi's or VST effects / Dx effects can be used.

You can even have multiple instrument layers with Keysplits / velocity layers and the like.

So i can't see how or why Live would limit this to just native effects - seems pretty short sighted of them IMHO.

Who knows, it is beta so it could still change.
If you have requests for Korg VST features or changes, they are listening at https://support.korguser.net/hc/en-us/requests/new

i hope so, Live is my app of choice like no other, i've been pondering getting project 5
to go along with it, but thought this upgrade might make it somewhat redundant but I guess diff interfaces can inspire in diff ways and that can only be good, I'm just pissed cause I wanted a simple and complete 'freeze' function and I wanted a simple and complete device chain feature.

Post

In the beta forums they stated they eventually will get VST device chaining going, but they ran into problems and didn't want it to hold up live5.

I don't see how you can really complain about it. Would you rather have live5 now, or wait 4 months for them to figure out VST chaining.

I agree about the freeze thing, if for no other reason, they kind of oversold its abilities. Again, this is something I'm sure they will address.

Remember, there are only 24 hours in a day, and 5 days in a working week. They want their app to be the best as well, but it takes time. :)

One thing I'll never understand, Cakewalk and Ableton are by FAR my favorite companies to deal with, they listen to their users, and really release amazing updates, and are quick with bug fixes, yet people still kvetch about everything.

That said, Live5 is a whale of an upgrade, and I'm one step closer to only having one host :-D
If it sounds good it is good.

what about midi drag'n'drop (ie stylus rmx) and dragging samples from explorer/desktop?

Something pretty cool is actually kinda reason like...The ability to save device chains as presets. They have a bunch of Impulse kits in the beta that have all of the effects chained up as presets. Very cool idea because people can share those "combinator" like presets. I likes it.
Can you also do this with VSTis and not just with the native Live plugs?
I recall hearing 'no' on that.
Yeah...its just for native Live plugs....They said they were going to work on it for other plugs, but it didn't make it in this release.
