Reason Combinator = modular synthesis?

Any thoughts on how with the introduction of the Combinator, Reason 3.0 has become a home of modular sythesis. I have never used programs like Reactor or for that matter, hardly any VSTs, but the Spider Audo/CV and now the Combinator devices now allow me to combine (virually) unlimited Maelstrom/Subtractor synthesized sound with (virually) unlimited NN-XT sample generated sound. When you throw in all the effects like the unbelieveable Scream4 and the Rv7000, Im starting to think completely differently about the creation of each element and am increasingly combining sample sound with synths. Is this modular synthesis?

Yep almost
The only thing that is missing is a highpass filter on the filter module + an adsr & Osc Section then it will be fully modular
Did you know that you also can use the matrix as an LFO so you can create virtually any waveform you want in the subtractor instead of the basic waveforms in the Subtractor LFO?
Works also with the other instruments
I just love the program, and looking forward to whats up next from the prop team

PS. If you have´nt visited www.Combinatorhq.com i suggest that you do that there is a bunch of combi refills with superb quality (Even better than most of the commercial ones)

With the advent of the Combinator one would think that coming up with some basic audio modules would be an obvious direction for the Propellerheads to go into. They need to come up with some other modules like a spline based version of the Matrix for creating LFOs and multi-stage envelopes. It's absurd to have to use a Subtractor just to have it's LFO modulate another synth's parameters. Of course since the Propellerheads have an insanely slow development time I wouldn't hold your breath for new modules anytime soon. I, for one, have pretty much discounted them and expect Reason going the way of Rebirth sometime soon.

I think there's enough of a customer base to ensure the Props will be around long enough.
Wow, D-Fusion i actually didn't now the martix could do that with Maelstrom
thats really cool and I'll be taking advantage of that from now on and thanks for the link!. But i do agree with John that a spline based version of the Matrix would be most helpful. Personally I love Reason 3.0 even though the Props are slow
And thanks for the link!

I didn't mean to imply the company would disappear just that Reason may go by the wayside if the don't maintain and develop it better/faster. They've already shown their ability to abandon projects in favor of new products. I have a feeling that part of the slowness in Reason updates may have to do with new products that may be in the works.RawTheory wrote:I think there's enough of a customer base to ensure the Props will be around long enough.

That being said it's still a pretty cool app even if it is plaugued by a strange and stubborn development philosophy.

Im not quite sure what the spline means, but my guess is that it is possible by hitting tab and choose Bipolar
Then you can create both negative and positive Curves for the Matrix LFO

Technically, it would be semi-modular...I think.shamann wrote:Reason has always been a modular synth. The combinator just makes it a better modular.
And the Combinator really does make it an all new instrument.

Hmmm. Strange. Just testing it now and it seems like it is down atm. Just try again laterbraj wrote:That link isn't working for meD-Fusion wrote:PS. These are spline based envelopes (Absynth 3)...

Nope, in the marketing vernacular, semi-modulars were fixed module sets with a mild degree of flexible signal routing.Cheeso wrote:Technically, it would be semi-modular...I think.

Reason is/was a very high level modular. The modules themselves were fairly self-contained and inflexible, but you could mix and match them to your heart's content.
The concept of modular is fairly trivial in the end. Cubase for instance functions on modularity, but Absynth alone does not (it's a good example of a semi-modular). Most computer music rigs are modular, just most people don't realize it, and sadly most rigs omitted the best parts of modularity. Neither here nor there, really, just pointing out.
Cheers,
Steve

Now i understand
I agree that would be awesome to have that in reason..

I agree. Some of the combi's UL'ed there are fantastic.
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good
