And nothing new about that. It's actually the new trend in Alternative Hip Hop to use a live band...

Ever listen to...

N.E.R.D
The Roots
Outkast?

to name a few...
But isn't it true that these 'groups' only use live musicians to replay already sampled loops of music that's already been recorded? That way they can circumvent paying royalties to the original musicians?

If they're recording original songs to vinyl, and then sampling themselves (ala portishead), then that would be cool-but I have yet to see anyone use a live band for doing anything except ripping off the original artists.
Remember that they play live "shows", shows are rarely what they seem...it's not uncommon for bands to have musicians out of site...Alan Fitzgerald was part of the touring line-up of Van Halen at one point...;)

Hip-hoprisy! Disposable heroes of.
LOL

Those guys were pretty good!

As far as rap with live music, it doesn't allways work out that well, infact I would say it mostly doesn't work out that well.

The muso's have to compete with the best allstars of FUNK and they usually don't sound as good, and the production usually isn't as good, and so on and so on.

I don't really like modern style hip hop, but I love the sound of looped beats, guitars, and a DJ. For me no band can make it sound the same.

Most hip hop covers alot of sounds, so if you had a 20 piece band and all of them were top notch and they weren't just thrown together to do a benefit, then I bet it would sound pretty damn good.

It is also a totally different deal to rap with a live band as opposed to a steady, robotic beat. I know 'cuz I've done them both.

This is not a blanket statement, but for the most part I believe it is true.

Anyone remember LL Cool J unplugged....arghhh that was some horrid shit!

I wonder how many people Bill Gates could feed? These rappers are small change compared to OLD (cough cough, Bushes) and BIG (Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Richard Branson) money.

Funny how some rappers flaunting the little bit of money they made irks people more than Skull n Bones people with 100 times as much meeting in private to decide which flavour of ice cream we peons will debate about over the next year.

I went to the web site, and I think it's safe to assume they aren't real diamonds.

Infact, I think it is safe to assume I'm going to buy one as soon as I get paid :D

Some of us realize that the rappers are doing exactly what the Skull n' Bones guys wish they would do.

All of the below mentioned groups both record and tour with live bands:

Outkast (Andre 3000 is learning guitar)

The Roots (They ARE a band basically, always have been even before it was cool)

N.E.R.D (Records and tours extensively with Spymob)

Black Eye Peas (Always tour with a live band and used a band on their last two albums)

Ozomatli (Another Hip Hop Live Band)

Kelis (Recorded and toured with members of No Doubt as her band.)

And let us not forget....

The Beastie Boys (need i say more?)

check my post I said something excessive like that...Lady J you should know in 34 years of guitar playing I have never paid over 500 bux for a guitar...I didn't limit it to rappers, you fooloishly assumed that...you're absolutely right...but I didn't defend bill gates..bush or anyone else...you need to stop putting words in peoples mouths...

I think anyone flaunting their money are assholes, I dont discriminate...some people on this earth can actually have a lot of money and never tell anyone...those who brag about it are lacking something somewhere else...BTW I do not watch award shows, I do not give a crap about hollywood, I think fame is the shallowest goal for art there is. I have never had a fight with my wfe over money because I wont allow it that power, I dont steal, I'm not in debt...well we're all in debt some...I dont have a grand worth of debt though.

So I dont know why again you play a psuedo race card but I do not appreciate it, please remember to keep your words out of my mouth...;)

They're not diamonds, they're crystals. Maybe Swarovski but I doubt that. I have Swarovski crystals on my vivaldi watch and will get my sidekick jewelled with them out at a secret and very cheap place I discovered that does this. These cups for sale on that site are using just standard cubic zirconium more than likely.

Lil John's on the other hand...

I didn't say they didn't did I? I said often they have more performers then meets the eyes (that would mean a larger band)...do you actually read the posts or just skim them...I'm not trying to be an ass but this pattern of you misinterpretting everything I say is growing old.

actually hink i was agreeing with you. do you actually read my posts or just skim them waiting for a reason to pounce on me? Im not trying to be nasty but this is a pattern i've noticed in the past. overreaction. no one ever mentioned a 'race card' nor directed ANY response to you personally so dont go there brotha.

TBH I couldn't tell a real diamond from a crystal...I don't buy diamonds..I'd rather put the money in the bank for my daughters education...but I'm a very simple man, I like a simple life, I dont need a flashy car, I would rather a lot of land and a tiny house then a large house on a smaller lot...flash doesn't impress me. I do not even have a cell phone...

Perhaps that's because my asswipe half brother is the exact opposite. He only plays Les Pauls (including a Jimmy Page, but he bought that in like 98), but he's filed bankruptcy twice...and still owes me a fortune, but I figure as long as he owes me he'll stay away, small price to pay :hihi: Twice he built very good construction companies, but let his addition destroy him...but it's not drugs or booze...it's needing to spend, spend, spend...

"Ozomatli (Another Hip Hop Live Band) "

I've seen them live, and They fuckin rule!!!!!! They are really awsome musicians!!!!!

Post

I have nothing against bands. I remember seeing The Goats back in the early 90's with a band! Anybody remember them? But I think what of you are missing is that Hip-Hop is based around sampling. Sampling is the basis and foundation of Hip-Hop. Working with a limited budget - "Shit I don't need a band, just give me stack of records a mic and a sampler" Kinda like the punk rock aesthetic. To take sampling away from hip-hop would be like taking the distortion pedal away from rock!

Post

Funny, and i thought it was possible to incorporate samples in a band... with a, um sampler....

guess i was wrong.
