Hello, all.

I'm very new to all things recording (and just registered with kvr) and find I'm having a problem with my Edirol UA-25 external sound card. It won't play midi's I've downloaded off the internet and it won't play midi's I've set up in Cubase (these will play, however, if I unplug the sound card, reboot, and let Cubase and Cool Edit use the native Windows XP drivers).

I just called Digital Village (where I bought the card) and all the guy could tell me was that I needed to download a midi playback plugin. I'm afraid I don't understand what any of that means.

Just seems weird that my stock laptop will play my midi files, but this new, expensive external card can't handle them (but does audio really well).

Can anyone please help!

Thanks,

Bowjest

What exactly do you mean by 'play MIDI files'. Soundcards dont 'play' anything themselves; they convert audio data into sound.
Cubase or cooledit will send audio data to the soundcard, but MIDI files are not audio data. MIDI files are instructions to synthesisers to play notes. Cubase can use MIDI files, but you need to have a synthesiser (real or software) somewhere for Cubase to send the MIDI to, so that the synthesiser can create the audio that goes to the soundcard.
I wasnt aware that Cooledit could play MIDI files at all...

Cubase will play back net sourced midi files if you set the track up in Cubase to play the software GM synth that comes as part of WinXP, it should be available through the track output on the left hand side of the arrange window or through devices setup, your setup in Cubase probably defaults to the Edirol output midi thats why you cant hear anything, but be prepared for varying results, probably the best bet for playback of these files if your soundcard doesn't have onboard GM playback is a 3rd party bit of software like Mixvibes http://www.mixvibes.com/pages/mixvibesfree.html
or Seer Musics ReMixer http://www.seersystems.com/download.shtml or most simply Windows media player which comes as part of Windows.

Dave,

I'll have a look at the links you supplied. I really appreciate it. Perhaps to put it in more straight forward terms, if I choose the Windows default output in Cool Edit, it will play the midi drum file (but only through the laptop speakers, not through the Edirol external device).

If I select the Edirol device, I don't hear the midi file. But it *does* play back the guitar stuff I recorded with no problems.

The main intention at this point is to be able to open Cubase and either use a downloaded midi drum file or use the drum map to create a midi file that I then put other tracks over. I was able to do this before I bought the Edirol UA-25, but had loads of background hum, so that was no good.

I'd also like to be able to eventually get a small midi keyboard and use that to create my own stuff and mix all that down to a wav or mp3 file.

If I download some sort of driver or plugin, will this enable me to hear the drum parts I create with the drum map or that I download and then let me use this as my back beat to put guitars, bass, and whatever over? Sorry for all the questions, but am eagre to get started doing some stuff.

Thanks

To playback midi drum files all you need to do in Cubase is load the midi file then load an instrument to play it back, if you have no drum plugs then Cubase comes with one built in called lm7, just go to devices menu and load it from the instrument part, then on the left hand side of the arrange page you can set the drum track to play using the plugin to generate the sounds, if your not sure of the basics of Cubase then read the manual, it explains how to set tracks up and route instruments etc. Cubase also comes with sufficient plug in instruments and effects to do basic track production :)

Thanks, Dave. I'll get the manuals out and have a go.

I really appreciate your help.
