Does Orion play well with others ?

Ive been eyeing Orion for its synths, samplers, and effects; but am quite content with Frooty as the host.

Is there a productive way to use Orion as a Froot suppliment, or does this require an all-or-nothing host switch ?

I cannot see any reason to use more than one host, it just unnecessarily complicate matters. Even running Fruity as a VSTi in ORION seems like more effort than it would be worth, unless you just want access to some of Fruity's generators [although why that would be the case is beyond me].
I find ORION much easier to work with than Fruity - it requires far fewer steps to get the simple things done and is infinitely more intuitive. Although if you are used to Fruity you may have to unlearn a few things.

Yes, there are ways!

1) Both hosts have Rewire. And you still can use FL Studio as a VSTi or DXi within Orion.

2) You can use FL Studio to program all of your drum & MIDI tracks. Save them as wav files & bounce it to Orion to finish the job.

3) If you have drum synths (Attack, CM-505, etc), then you will like Orion a lot better because all of your outputs will have their own mixing channel each (a little something that Orion can do better than FL Studio).

BTW, I'm a FLS-user myself. And since I learn a lot about Orion (demo), I will be looking out for the upcoming v6 as well.

Pummel would likely end up keeping FLS as a drum machine program (counting the lifetime free updates) as well as the FL Sampler for the time-stretching! 8)

And BTW, I know what it's like to have more than one host at a time. It's hard to stay away from Live 3 (or to stop thinking of the upcoming Live 5 for that matter). :hihi:

Thanks for the info, guys. In general, I find that hosts have more to offer for the $ than soft synths. So, multiple hosts can be an asset; moreso if they cooperate with one another.

Actually, that's not exactly true. FL does the same thing. If you use multi-out plugins, FL can route each output to separate channels at the mixer. This option is an "option" in FL which is fine. What's better though is that FL's mixer doesn't sprout 40 giant mixer channels when you add and enable multi out plugins. The channels in FL aren't dedicated to any one plugin. There's a set number of channels and if you enable a multi-out plugin, you can route it's outputs to whichever mixer channels you like and still route other instruments to the same mixer channel. It also means that you don't have to commit to a "manageable" number of outputs with your plugin before using it. I have a plugin with 24 outs. If I decided to enable all 24 in FL it doesn't make any difference because the mixer doesn't sproute extra channels. In Orion, this would mean a mixer so long that I'd have to do a lot of scrolling to get at the channel I need to edit. So FL is handling multi-out plugins decidely better than Orion in this regard. Orion would be a whole lot better if it were able to hide unneeded mixer channels.

I already stool corrected after reading a later thread covering the same issue about multi-outputs in FLS (something that I had a problem with before). Either way, thanks for bring it up. 8)

Except that its an extra process that you are forced to go through every time, which to my mind is a total pain in the arse. Although its hard to argue that ORION handles multi-timbral plugins well. Then again, I fail to see why multi-timbral plugins are even necessary.

I feel the same way about going through THAT extra process. It's too much time setting things up. And to make matter worse (for myself anyway), I just learn the information about setting multi-output channnels in FLS only a few days ago. As a FLS-user, that is sad.

It took using Orion (demo) for me to learn a lot about the number of outputs that were available with each of my instruments. In a word: Simple! :D

BTW, I happy that most drum synths have multi-outputs so I can use different effects for each drum & percussion part (especially kick & snare). But as for keyboard synths, I don't think it's necessary (IMHO). Beside, if I wanted to multiple synth sounds from FM7, then I'll upload as many FM7s as needed! 8)
