Hey,
I'm in the process of downloading the famous Gimp application to my Mac (I'm on Macosx 10.3 Panther).
Now it says on the site I need a special new fangled extension to run it (?) called "X11"..

where can I download it? I can't seem to find anything on the Apple site (or I didnt look properly).
Would be cool if someone of you OSX folk could point me to it , or send me a link!

Marco :)

X11 is an application that lets you run unix-based applications, or at least that's what it looks like to me.

It can be downloaded at: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ ... acosx.html

It may also be in your HD/Applications/Utilities folder already...

If you have the panther install disks, I think it's on one of them.

Have a look at GimpShop as well. It's a stable hack of Gimp which gives it a more Photoshop-like appearance and functionality. You'll also need Gimp-print as well if you want to print.
Coffee please, black, no sugar.

Isn't X11 all the stuff that runs the GUI in unix-based OS's?

Yes.
Running X11 on OS X allows you to run other desktop-environments as well. KDE, Gnome, *step, *box, &c.
Very nice if you want to be able to use the GUI-based stuff from Fink or Darwinports (who said there wasn't a lot of freeware[1] for Mac?).

So you could make OSX run WindowMaker? Now that would be awesome!

Yes, I suppose you could. Not sure if it's in the Fink or Darwinports-repositories, but if there's a PPC-version, you certainly could.

//edit
Fink used to have the choice between Xfree86 and Xorg, but I couldn't find Xorg anymore last time I checked. I hope it's still there, as funny things are happening over at XFree86's.

hey thanks for all the info! :)
I'm running into problems though - tried installing the x11 thingie from a CD called "Tools", but it only unpacks as a "package receipt" (to no avail), so it's obviously not the prper x11. But i can't seem t find it anywhere on either of the two "proper" installation disks... :?

I hope i dont have to install Panther all over again with only one more option checked :scared:

Is it possible to run the osx installation in some "special" mode where i only grab the utilities i want? (if that makes any sense)

Marco :)

Yep. It's available through fink.

X11 is called a 'windowing system'. It does all the bookkeeping associated with windows. It does not control what windows actually look like, for that you need a window manager. I believe windowmaker is a window manager, so in the X11 startup you woudl specify that the windows are managed by windowmaker.

Maybe do a search (make sure hidden files are listed too). It's probably somewhere in /usr/bin/xfree86 or /usr/local/bin/xfree86 (or usr/lib/*, it's been a while).

Or use terminal.app, cd to /usr and do "ls -la". it will list all your files and folders in there.

No, it's an additional install (like Classic or Developement Tools).
Oh, you might want to install Developement Tools as well, it includes GCC which you might need to install some packages through Fink.

There's a tool which allows you to do this but I forgot the name.

I would suggest using the download version. For some reason, I couldn't get the version from my CD's to work either. It seemed more like just an SDK, although it does claim to be the whole X11. But the downloaded version worked without a hitch for me and GIMP runs great as well as OpenOffice and Koffice and even Scribus and many others. Good luck! It brings more value to Mac for me knowing that I can use that much more software since I did that.
