Why so many bad songs/artists at soundclick/cdbaby?

Has anyone notices how awful the music is on soundclick, cdbaby and other independent artist websites?

Not only that why are most of them listed in on the featured and best selling section. Geeez, no wonder they can't get record deals. Who buys this stuff anyways.And you never see stats of how much is sold on these sites anywhere on the net. Now its startning to make sense, just another marketing scheme to steal(a few pennies, haha hahha hah) from the already poor independent artists. its a shame!

I guess If you want things done right, you got to do it yourself.



Also, why is yahoo's unlimited music service so lame in terms of songs in the electronic section????? There is a lot of old junk and overcommercialized trance! Please if i see another tiesto remix....the guy takes up 70% of the top 100 song list. not even kidding(yea, so i like a few of his remixes:) but come on!!!

most of the top songs at those websites are the artists that have spent time posting their music links on fourms and arranging their artist page with lots pics and words on their pages

I bought an Adelaide EP from cdbaby after a friend lent me a copy he got at a live show, so I can vouch that people do actually buy CD's from them. I have yet to hear anything else from there I'd want to buy, though.

first, a plug: my brother in law has some pretty awesome CDs up at cdbaby. they were recorded at digidesign's studio on a protools HD system so they at least sound professional

as to why there's so much crap... well, the fact that anybody can make a record these days pretty much guarantees that everybody WILL... low barrier to entry, and all that. unfortunately it's hard to find the gems among the dross. oh well! nobody said democratization of music was gonna be easy.

Well, I've downloaded tons o tunes from here, downloaded tons o tunes from AudioShots, bought about 10 CDs (this year) from CDBaby.. and I'd say only about 10% of it all was crap. Granted some was definitely not in a style I liked, but that doesn't make it crap - just well-produced stuff I don't happen to want to listen to.

There certainly is shite music out there.. but just as much commercial shite as independent shite! Nobody has a monopoly on crap, I think.

This is the result of the ongoing revolution of how music can be made and distributed today. Basically anyone can produce "something" and get it out there... if it's good or bad is kinda up to the audience but I agree that there is a lot of mediocre and downright crappy stuff out there.

But hey, that's part of the liberation from the old music biz...

On the other hand, I have found some amazing tracks from totally independent artists on the good old mp3.com, soundclick and others... it just takes a little bit of patience.

I'm not saying its all bad, I haven't listened to everything, but in general...

the majority involved in any field arent the greatest in their business, and when it comes to the arts, quality becomes even more subjective.

the more specific your tastes are, and the more demanding/critical your evaluations are, the more likely it is that you'll be dissatisfied with the art you see/hear. and then there is the completely non-quantifiable element of whether something simply grabs you or not. no matter if a piece is in your preferred style, and its expertly crafted, sometimes it just doesnt spark any great feeling in you.

so the combination of:
a majorty lacking all that much natural talent + whether its in a style you like + whether its performed the way you like + whether it strikes a chord in you nor not = you'll probably dislike most art. thats just the way it goes. and what sucks to one person could be great to another.

i've only bought one cd from cdbaby, but i do dig it. the cd is "have another day" by angry man breakfast. i liked it so much i even wrote a review for the site. the only reason i found out about it is because i contacted paul socolow to ask him what acoustic bass he played during an album/tour with david byrne 10 years ago. in one of his replies he mentioned his 'angry man' project with the same drummer from the byrne gigs, so i checked out the demos on the site and bought it.

oh and btw, considering how much i too normally denouce as crap music, im quite surprised at how much good (imho) music i've heard here at kvr. we've got quite an impressive amount of tallent hanging out in the cafe.
