Recently I've come up with an idea of a guitar amp - not a sim, but something instantly usable. I'm not a guitar player myself, but I think I do know how to record good sounds from a guitar combo (given it's a good sounding combo).

I hope this alpha version is bugless and is usable right away. I think this guitar amp can be used for both high-gain and clean tones. CPU usage will be lower in the final release version.

Here are preliminary descriptions of the parameters:

Emphasis and Cut Filters. These are used to shape the sound of an amplifier. This is a very powerful tone-shaping stage.

Pre-filter. Used to filter the incoming guitar signal. This is usually useful if the pickups on the guitar are too boomy or too crisp. This can be also used to shape the sound.

Amplifier. This part is usually represented by a single Drive knob on the actual guitar combos. I've changed this concept and made it possible to get very different overdrive tones using three knobs. Tone knob adjusts the character of distortion. With low tone value high Drive generates crispy distortion, without much overdriven body. High tone value provides a more solid overdriven body. Phase parameter adjusts the overdrive performance. With this parameter it is possible to fine-tune harmonical structure of the overdrive - for example if you hear too much discord tuning the Phase parameter may help. In some cases Phase also works as a mic displacement control - you can get different degrees of tone with it.

Speaker cabinet impulse response selects which speaker cabinet model (and mic) to use. It is possible to load external WAV or AIFF files, but please be careful with large files.

(note this is a temp folder - executable file can be removed later).

Comments are very welcome!

A note on speaker impulses. These are Beamsonic impulses. I maybe wrong, but in my opinion these are freeware impulses. If it's not the case please let me know.

OK I played with it for a few minutes.
There is something fundamentally wrong here.
If I turn the DRIVE up I get more distortion as expected but I also get to hear the clean guitar.
It's almost as if the pre fx signal is mixed with the post fx signal.
If this is the case then it's wrong and needs to be fixed.

Andrew, I will check this out. Anyway, try this with Tone at max - indeed, I've found myself it does not work predictable with the Tone below max.

Before I download this to try: Is the impulse/speaker section adding much of a latency?
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Sascha, not much really. Should be playable in real-time.

Updated version:

Plus three presets and refined Tone control. Now Tone works like a 'channel' switch on guitar combos. I.e. low tone creates cleaner undistorted sound.

Wow, I have been looking for smooth, real speaker sim with air and high's. The SVT bright cab sims are perfect for speaker simulating my valve preamp to create some modern metal tones.
And its real time.

The onboard distortion is old school but very, very good. Clean up well and sounds like an old amplifier. Better than Guitar Rig, Amplitube or any modeller by far.

Good work.

Now we need some modern metal tones from the preamp section!

Grants, thanks for comments. Could you send me some *good* examples of 'metal tones' in mp3 format to info@voxengo.com?

Grants, Phase = 0 substitutes to modern distortion sound. But of course, some cabinet sound not currently in the list may be required.

Dimitar, thanks for invitation.

Any motivation to develop a system for bass-players at some point ? I know guitar players may be outnumbering bassists ... BUT ... !
