Hey, I'm fairly new here, so... welcome me??? I dunno... Anyway, I LOVE free things. I would search for miles and miles to find good free recources. Well, I have tons of time on my hands, and I've come across some really good free soundfonts if you're interested. I'll make a list here. Ok, I've put a link to a search result of the soundfont, in case you need to login to view the soundfont. You have to make an account to be able to download these, but that's no big deal, as it's free and I've never gotten an e-mail from them. . :) Oh, and PLLLEASE add reeverb. These sounds are nothing without it..

Soundfont list

STRINGS:

-Cadenza Strings
VERY good natural sounding strings. All of these are mono, so you had better bust out the stereo inhancer. The violin sounds drunken on low notes near G (lowest a violin can play) but it sounds natural in the high area. Viola is the same. Still natural. Sound is ABIT crowded on the right side, but that can easily be fixed with panning (unless it's just my crappy headphones). The big string section is pretty nice, but the attack is akward. That can be fixed too. Overall I'd use this to layer with some other ones, just to beef the sound and hide the looping. It's pretty good, I reccomend a download.

-Parts 1 and 2 Ultimate Strings
Nice sound. Mono again. I'd say better than Cadenza strings, but all it has is a big essemble. Part 1 and 2 is to split it up across the scale, one is high notes, the other is low. I think that's kinda pointless, but whatever. You can just layer these two and it will work just as good as one soundfont. I reccomend layering this one with Cadenza Stirings. It hides the loop in both of them, so that you can play long sustained notes without the sound of a short loop.

-Tron Strings (# 4 result)
Panning is REALLY inconsistant. It's all over the place. Stereo enhancer should hide this, but otherwise it's kinda a hassle. But it also is the best sounding one of these three so far. Risky, but if you can fix the panning, it's worth it.

-Roland Fast Attacks
Hmm, sounds pretty good. It's the best you're gunna get with freeware. The panning is respective to where the instruments would be on stage (lows on right, highs on left) so you don't have to worry about realism. The attack is really wierd though, its not beefy enough. You can fix this by increacing the attack by a TINY bit. It will beef it up. All across the scale is pretty good sounding.

-+Symphony (#4 result)
For picked (pizzcatto) strings. Well, ok. It sounds like crap. BUT, I havn't heard any better in freeware. Each instrument is seperated, (Violin, Viola, Cello, Basses) and they are set at different octaves, so you can't layer effectively. You can always just put notes one by one in each channel, which would make it sound more orchestrated and less "layered". Mono, so use stereo enhancer. Also a great stereo harp.

-Musica Theoria
I used this for violins (before I got EWQL, but I can't even use it. I have to make every instrument a soundfont, which takes a long time) Viola sounds EXACTLY like the violin, so don't bother with that one. Violin sounds pretty good. Nice strong vibrato, but the loop is disgusting. Increace the MOD wheel and it will help it a bit, but good luck playing a slow relaxing melody with this one. It's great for fast stuff though.

-Strings DXS Super Orchestra
OMG. I almost forgot this one!!! BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST!!! For a big, natural sound, download this. The sound is BARELY muffled, but you can just EQ it to fix that. PLEASE, for the sake of...of... something... DOWNLOAD THIS!

BRASS:

-Anttu Brass (#2 result)
Just a big brass essemble. Good and clean, nice attack, very good. BUT, the looping isn't seamless. AHHGG! It takes a while for the looping to kick in, so in the midst of all you other instruments, you won't be able to hear it very much... It still ruins a great free soundfont.

--Musica Theoria
I gotta hand it to them, this has the BEST french horns essemble!!!!! It's melo, but you can make it sound like it was played louder by boosting the mid-high range with Parametric EQ. The tuba sounds good too. Trumpet sounds like a duck.

-adv_gm7
Good trumpet, trombone, and decent tuba. I reccomend it just to have good trumpet and trombone sounds.

-Anttus French Section
AWWWWSSSSOMMMMMEEEEEEE French horns. Even though Music Theoria is pretty sweet, NOTHING can compare to this soundfont. This thing can hang with the proffessionals. HUGE AND HEAVY to light and smooth velocity layers... Please download this... I always us this one... ... sometimes...

-Fat Trombones
Great FREE trombones. I said FREE. You get what you pay for, and this is one of the only trombone sections I could find. It's FAAAT, so re-EQ it.

WOODWIND:

-+Symphony (#4 result)
Great for woodwinds. Just in general. I LOVE the piccolo. It's awsome. DOWNLOAD THIS ONE FOR WOODWIND!!!

PERCUSSION:

-RolandOrchestralRythm
AWSOME!!! Get this for crashes, bd rolls, timpani rolls, and snares. Great quality stereo samples. The best of the best in freeware.

-Jnsgm2 drums Orchestra
With crashes and timpanis, it doesn't come close to RolandOrchestralRythm, but with other misc perc hits, get this. Pretty good quality. Overall it's great for just fillers.

-Trilogy
Ethnic Texture and Hand drums. AWSOME. Great bongos and good quality.

FINALLY DONE!!! Ok, if you have any questions, you can just ask me here.

alergechicken, you´ve got very good ears and a similar taste. And nearly in the same situation as I am; I call it : "Having more free time than money". I had already half of them, so I thank you for the second half ! Indeed the Sf2Midi site is marvellous. Only the link (here) to yourself didn´t work. Take care, cheers... .. .

Post

Nice post, alargechicken.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

Post

A post from a new member about free soundfonts in which they aren't begging for them without doing a forum search, but are instead reviewing and recommending them for the benefit of others?

I think this might be a forum first :-o

Yeah, pretty much so. Quite a nice introduction, innit?

Nice list, and I can definitely agree on the Strings Super DXS Orchestra sf2.. But I have to make the obligatory reference to the SJ Orchestral SF2... Believe it might still be hosted on Audioshots? SF?
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

I knew the site already, but thanks to your post I see I didn't know them all, just about half of them. Thanks very much! Those posts are a fine thing, alargechicken.
By the way, I try to learn building soundfonts myself now. If you got friendly advice (I use awave, but can use Vienna too, not tried it yet though, and heard of Alive1.52 and Synthfont) - simply write me a private message (pm) :D .Would like to learn that well, as my samples are recorded by myself and not with the best equipment, and any further mistake can't be good then...

And I especially like your remarks about panning, adding some fx and so on.

I know by experience that those are just the posts that keep 90% from readers here to actually start their first post.
After all KVR is only in part an elitist forum, so don't mind, 90%, and post wonderful posts like alargechicken does :D. Indeed wonderful advice.

And if there are questions, that's in fact what a forum is about. The whole internet wouldn't be frequented half as much as it is if people sat reading ALL of the manuals or searching hours before they ask something.

(I understand what seasoned users mean, but from time to time they get a bit strange like "ooh you can't visit this place, your umbrella isn't cool enough, get a new one and come back. So there are more kinds of people, and KVR could well have more new people who post. We got 0,000001% women here, and that's not because they wouldn't make music).

:D

Nope, it isn't as we haven't been able to clear the copyright issues.
Seems as if nobody knows whom it was, doing that (admittedly nice) soundfont.

Sad thing. Many of us have it, nobody said it wasn't free anymore, no information to be got, and no possibility of sharing it. In a world of cracked software that sounds a bit strange. I'd think if someone gave away sth. for free, no textfile "this is from me" included , nothing to be heard again, why not share this? But I understand Spe3d and you, only a bit strange that most of us have it and others should not be allowed to?

thanks mr chicken :D

Post

thanks alargechicken, i real public service announcement. some of those fonts i already use and the cadenza strings are almost a constant :)

it's good of you to give pointers on how to make the most of them, i can't do that, and should point out i'm not qualified to make definitive comments on sound quality/authenticity but if these also help anyone as much as they have me, let me add a few more links:

fitches cello great cello by kvr member

nando florestan - various strings, bassoon, french horns etc

sinfonia - in the absence of js orchestral, this might fill a gap, GM layout

papelmedia - some more orchestral stuff

hope these widen someone's options

regards

A link to some freebies of a "early patches" CD I own (really great stuff if you like lionharps, dulcimers, many old drums, tubular bells, flutes, tamburos and the like, very well made!)

4 are free for download, dudy, cister, syrian frame drum and ud!
Get them HERE.

They are in sf2-format, for terratec, akaiS3000 and some dream94b.
