HI
You won't go 'MAD' editing midi in XT either, as oppossed to Tracktion that is!
I like Tracktion but imo the Midi editing sux, shame.

nope - don't worry - once you get used to it it's really easy and simple...Noisepolluter wrote: Feeling very intimidated and intellectually inferior.
- extract the zip-folder 'sa' with its subfolder anywhere you like. It this folder there should be a file 'default.ext' - just drag this file onto your quickstart-panel.
Whenever you double-click on this shortcut on your quickstart-panel your default-project will load. When you set up eXT as you like you can chose 'set as default' in the save-menu in the top left corner of the main eXT screen. - click '...' right beside 'save'. Then this 'default.ext' file gets updated and you can automatically start eXT with this new pre-settings if you click on the shortcut on your quickstart-panel.
If you have any further questions just ask. (though I'm leaving the house now until tonight...- but surely someone else will gladly help in the meantime)

Thanks Jens - that's one step cleared up!
I was trying to follow Darkstar's thoughtfully supplied user guide/update system thing, but I think I just need to get the basic, non-upgraded thing up and running first and figure out how the essentials work - setting up with my soundcard, recording audio, using vst's etc.
Sorry to be such a tiresome whining noob - hopefully I'll be able to actively contribute to this forum at some point in the future rather than just being a knowledge vamipire!
Thanks guys for your help so far. I may be asking for much more of it, for which I apologise in advance!
EDIT: oops - no "default.ext" file when I extract the "SA" folder - just standalone.exe and default.gui

Read through the eXT Beginners Guide, it'll get you up and running pretty quickly - it worked for me! And I'm a guitarist turned keyboard player.
I still use T2 for mastering work, since I can drop effects on clips and level/balance all my songs for a CD in a single T2 project, but I find myself recording and mixing to stereo in eXT standalone almost all the time.
For some reason, the lack of PDC hasn't stopped me, but most of my latency-heavy effects I don't use until I'm mastering (like the Voxengo plugs). I'm a heavy user of Spin Audio and Kjaerhus plugs and they seem to do fine (although I might have a tin ear)!
I could see myself dropping T2 altogether, actually, as my eXT skills increase and the program evolves (rapidly!) into a killer sequencer (not like it isn't already!).

...and as I told ya in the PM and sometimes here
(nobody could say I'd repeat myself with this over and over
)
ASK all kinds of questions! The beginner's guide is first class, take it to bed with you
, kiss and hug and read it...and ask any question here. I get the feeling the "oooh not again a beginner"-type of people is rarely seen at this energy-XT-forum. And that's another good thing about XT - the friendly users.
So ask. If there is something you wanna ask and think it might be not tooooo difficult, it would be a good idea to put a "Q" = questions before your new topic. Then anybody knows it's a question, and help is always near
aaah, a guitarist...nice...

Thanks all - I've managed to install correctly, have recorded some audio and have even plugged Jamstix in there successfully!
Once I got over the initial disorientation things began to crystallise a little.
