Im after a single turntable mainly for ripping and sampling off vinyls. I want something decent, you know that wont f**k up in half hour, or go out of tune. But at the same time I dont want to pay the earth. The only deck I know is any good is the ole 1200mkII, but thats a little more than need (I think???).
Anyone care to recommend a model? The Nummark stuff seems to be reasonably priced, is it worth a look?

More than you need? all it does is play records, and you can pitch it up or down if you want. They are damn sturdy turntables, and probably worth every penny of the price. Used to have them at a radio station I did a show on once a week. They were pretty old, but still running strong, and I never had a problem with them there.tee boy wrote:I know is any good is the ole 1200mkII, but thats a little more than need (I think???).

I just wish I had some extra pennys to spend on one for myself.

Haha, no when i say more than i need Im thinking more in terms of quality. Kind of like the wife who wants a BMW just to pick the kids up from school!
This think literally has to play records without going out of tune. Thats it. It doesnt have to be amazing. Im sure the MkII is a fantastic deck but I dont think I need a model of that quality just for sampling the occassional hihat.
Tell you what though, I'll probably have a pair just for the f**k of it when my numbers come up!
Stanton STR8 100? Not heard of those (which isnt supprising), I'll have a butch.
Thanks for the advice fellas!

If you don't need it for DJing, you could see if you can track down an old Thorens. These are really good- built like a tank, incredibly stable.

Any cheap brand name deck will suffice IMO that isn't a DJ deck. DJ decks are far from audiophile in terms of sound quality, they are more interested in robustness. I have a pair of Vestax PDX-2000's which are cool as for scratching with but nothing to write home about in terms of stunning sound quality. They certainly aren't poor sounding but at £300 each, they shouldn't be. They should last pretty well though and the huge high torque motor is why they cost.
In other words a £100 HiFi deck will be more suited for your needs than a £150 DJ deck. To be honest, any fully working deck will be ok providing the stylus is fine. Lets not forget that people have listened to music on cheap hifi decks for years and the vast majority have no problem with going out of time - If your just sampling a loop or a single hit then not even the shittest deck ever made would go out of time enough to notice or make the loop unusable.
A quick search at richer sounds came up with the following at £49

More than good enough IMO.

No, it's real. Some people think it's the best record player ever made.tee boy wrote:Nuffink,

I bought an old AKAI deck on a garage (junk) sale for this purpose, to replace a Technics deck that was significantly worse. Now I don't have to polish the recordings in CoolEdit as much as I used to.
Maybe some day I'll find an even better deck, but I'm not spending more than €10,- on each deck
