Except the toms are also synthesized... I know, being nitpicky is considered rudehollowsun wrote:Then came the Linn (all samples) and Roland retaliated with the 'hybrid' 909 that had analogue (synthesised) kick and snare (for more control over the sounds) but sampled toms, cymbals and hats.

Ive owned 2 different TR-808s in my life. Both times I would buy it, be inlove with it, use it on EVERYTHING, then get tired of it realize its HUGE and a pain to sync up with my PC(though the sync box availble by the guy on ebay is great for 70 bucks..)
2 things I notice about the 808, my 2 examples sounded QUITE different. The first 808 I had had a very weak kick decay, I did the mod found on hyperreal to extend the decay to the point of self oscillation which was actually pretty cool. The 2nd 808 had cymbal issues and the decay would vary greatly. I ended up replacing the grid switches, and ebaying it off after sampling it. I dont really miss it, Lil John kinda ruined the 808 for everyone...

well, One of the reasons (aside from problems making analog drums sound "real") with the 808 is that they used 10% tolerance parts, so potentially if you get the right combination of parts that are over/under their specified values, you could seriously alter the intended sound.
In the 909, they tightened up the tolerances and designed the circuits to achieve a more consistent sound from example to example.
Well the 808 used 24 ppqn resolution, so the sync can olnly get soo accurate. the manufacturer of the sync box also said that many apps dont out put a stable enough midi clock to run the 808 accurrately. He actually recommended sonar, and I think DP. He didnt like Cubases midi out(but I bought the sync box in the days of VST 5 and sonar 1, so things may or may not have changed.)

You say 909 and I say 808Chase wrote:???emdot_ambient wrote:Me? I own a hardware TR-707 and actually purchased it knowing full well what kind of sounds it made. It's the TR-808's little brother and sounds it.
The 707 is known for sounding a bit like the 909; The 606 is known for sounding a bit like the 808.
Let's call the whole thing off!
Actually, it probably does lean more 909 'cause it's a lot drier/punchier while the 808's analog sound is a lot woobish (to coin a word), expecially on the kick.
But the 707 was/is still for the poor man, not the rich man.
Like I said, I got it just for its control features. Heck of a lot cheaper than getting a MIDI-CV controller with DIN sync.
