I've got the chance to borrow a CSx1 from a mate for a week or two, and though i might as well sample the f**k out of it while i have it. Is it any good, and cool sounds on it or is it not worth bothering with?
Havent heard it yet and i know jack about that keyborad, so any tips?

I don't think it's worth it... maybe some of the sounds... i own a cs1x, i also like it, but... some of the pads can be useful.
Anyway... you can listen to it's drumkits, because they are already sampled in the Meanbeat samples site...
And...
It's called cs1x...

Ah well, its blue and it looks nice, and its free. Maybe i can tweak some good sounds from it myself.9b0 wrote:I don't think it's worth it... maybe some of the sounds... i own a cs1x, i also like it, but... some of the pads can be useful.

I own a CS1x and to be honest, I only use it as a MIDI controller these days. I used to like its pads and leads, but todays VSTi-s make them sound thin and digital to me. I wouldn't consider CS1x to be worth sampling really, but if you come up with some nice sounds, share them as SysEx as well

Leads, bass? Nowadays I use Albino2, Sytrus, ASynth, MinimogueVA - they can really deliver much warmer and smooth lead and bass sounds. As for pads, Z3ta+ and/or Crystal can do the job.
Or wait, you were joking right?

I have owned a CS1x since it was launched and have extensively sampled it for use at Hollow Sun, and it's subsequent inclusion on Zero G's "Nostalgia" VSTi.
I have sampled all 256 presets and have them here in wav format. I did consider sampling all the raw waveforms, but that's nearly 1000 waveforms, multiplied by at least 5 multisamples per waveform, so I haven't attempted that yet
For those who question the sonic abilities of the CS1x, think again. This can be an awesome synth and it's hands on knob twiddling makes it a great live tool. Not many, if any, VSTi's can boast that. Add that to the fact that once sampled, you can tweak some of these sounds and make them even more powerful. For example, I took one of the pads, made two keygroups, detuned one up by a few cents and the other down by a few cents then panned one hard left and one hard right and instantly got a huge, full pseudo stereo pad.
Ultimately, I am looking at releasing the entire set as a sample pack, but haven't gotten round to it yet....you know, life gets in the way

Well, im not gonna sample all of it, cos i'll prob be using it in our new band (which is why im borrowing it, to see how it will fit in and to get used to the working etc)

The Yamah CS series is the precursor to the MOTIF. I'm a MOTIF ES owner, and I can testify that it holds its own, very well.
You can't get that multi-gigabyte-sound-library type of sound out of it, but you can't get that hardware ROMpler sound out of a multi-gigabyte softsynth either. So for me hardware ROMplers will always have a place.
As for the CS2x specifically, I've never had one, but I'm a big fan of Yamaha synths...

If there are any presets you like inparticular, I could always let you have a few samples for free, seeing as your a fellow "Norwicher"Kriminal wrote:Well, im not gonna sample all of it, cos i'll prob be using it in our new band (which is why im borrowing it, to see how it will fit in and to get used to the working etc)

Well, I'm not really questioning it's sonic capabilities - after all I've done quite a few tracks using only sounds from the CS1x (well excluding drums). I'm just somewhat fed up with them - they sound cheap and thin to me these days. The nasty stepping on the filter, lack of a high pass (CS1x), limited polyphony in performance mode, crappy builtin effects - it all made me stop using my CS1x as a sound source and turn to VSTi-s instead... But as a controller it's really good for synth playing - especially once the knobs are mapped to VSTi parameters.Lovesign wrote:For those who question the sonic abilities of the CS1x, think again. But perhaps I should reconsider? After all it is responsive beyond most VSTi-s - even at latencies below 5ms.
That's something I always found to be rather hard - I mean to fit it in a band. But that's probably style dependent.Kriminal wrote:Well, im not gonna sample all of it, cos i'll prob be using it in our new band (which is why im borrowing it, to see how it will fit in and to get used to the working etc)

Good question, to which I don't have a definitive answer, but seeing as the CS1x hasn't been in production for a few years now, and Yamaha are nowhere near as letigious as Roland, I doubt it would be a problem. Technically, I guess it would be, but it's all good publicity for Yamaha, who always seem to be "down" with the "doods" who make musicKriminal wrote:BTW, is it legal to sample and redistribute the sounds from this synth?
