 I think it's hard to tuna bass. Do you play everything yourself or are you part of a grouper? I can play the drum.
OK, no more puns.
nice pic, but please explain the pun to an humble
italian guy, <grin>
"Bass", the word for the instrument, happens to also be a kind of fish. So, for example, if you look up "Bass" on Google, you'll get a mix of fishing websites and bass guitar websites. However, these two words are pronounced differently. "Bass", as in the guitar, is pronounced "Bay-ss", whereas "Bass", as in the fish, is pronounced "Baa-ss".

You can look them up on www.m-w.com and listen to the word being spoken, seeing I have a hard time writing pronounciations. :)
many thanks Greg, now I get it, yes the voice in my tuna says "Baa-ss", LOL ,

that's all the text-to-speach program could do

If you type 'bass' as 'base' it should sound right.

Also thanks to everyone that has reviewed my track. :)

 I still smirk when I hear this. But jokes aside, what do you use for bass? It sounds like you run a bus with a few tracks through a ring modulator sometimes. It made me think I should try that sometime. Pretty cool.
Cheers (I think) :hihi: I used Scarbee J'Slap'n'Fingered for the electric bass and Minimonsta for the subbass... The cockney wide boy rap voice is treated with Spitfish, Blockfish and Hematohm. No ring modulation as far as I know but Hematohm can have a similar sound.. But yeah, I love mashing tracks together with effects - creates a much more organic sound... There was some Izotope Vinyl on the orchestral stuff (including the reverb) to give it a bit more grunge.
Ohm Force, DFP and Izotope feature on pretty much every track I ever do.. Some of the warmest sounding plugs I know of..

Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

Thanks, man. That's all Reason (2.5), compression via the Scream4 Tape distortion setting. Heck, I think everything but the vox was through a copy of Scream4. ;)
That's amazing! I used Reason 2.5 totally (plus some Kjaerhus classics), and listen to the difference between the two songs! When I first saw Reason, I was afraid it would make everybody's music sound alike. But that's clearly not the case! Great song, btw.

Yeah, it has quite a range: I use it Rewired through Sonar for most of my stuff. The NNXT sampler shaped through Scream4 is an excellent combination.
Great song, btw.
Thanks!

A surprising and honest-feeling confession. I really like the mix and the (free)verb - it's a little low-budget-Christion-singer-songwriter side - but I don't hear that much so it doesn't bother me. I think it's worth doing a couple more vocal takes to get each word right and I'd consider changing "burdens" to just "burden." You've got a great voice. The more I hear this, the more I'm sure you could go somewhere with this song. It's appealing and has a good enough foundation to shape into almost anything you want. Well done.
Thanks for taking the time to review the song and offer up suggestions. I really struggled with whether to submit this as a KVR entry, particularly with the theme of this month.

I'm trying to take the attitude that a good song will get interest at a label much more than slick production. With the few people I know that have been signed to major labels, that has been the case.

One of my best buddies in High School was Doug Corella. Killer drummer - heroes were Buddy Rich and Billy Cobham while others had posters of Neil Peart on their walls.

Anyhow, he ended up in the Verve Pipe; which in the 90's had a #1 hit in the USA, the Freshman.

Do you think he played drums for them? No - keyboards, even though he was by far a superior drummer.

Another band that is local is being picked up by Chrysalis. Their demo is in my CD player and it is very slick in the Coldplay/Travis/Radiohead vein. The record company sent them back to the drawing board to re-track nearly every song and take out alot of the production and get a more raw sound.

Lessons learned: Don't try to sell your song on your ProTools chops, but on the song itself.

This one of mine has some work to go. Thanks for your suggestions.

Some things that I wanted to included but time did not allow:

I wanted to use some big Taiko drum samples way in the background for a kick drum along with a sampled 'chain dropping onto a dirt floor' sound for a snare, but never found the right stuff.

A low cello line or duo might be nice also, and a better song structure.

Regardless of the context, I prefer good songs over production. I'm glad you entered the song you did. I wouldn't worry about being too rigid with your self-imposed rules. Rules are only useful insofar as they encourage a positive outcome. If they stifle creative decisions, they should be abandoned.

"Time To Advance" Audiorn Dream (eljorno)
Not bad atmospheric stuff, but a bit too repetitious. The sounds are pretty GMish too which makes it sound more like a game soundtrack than a hit song to my ears. Try some different bass figures and drum parts. I like the sustained strings. The patches sound a lot like my old Roland D-10.

Rapped to your song: Ain't seen "8 Mile" don't plan for awhile on account of some chuckleheads who live on the Isle, lousy with post-counts and long topic threads, think they rhyme keepin' time, their words sublime, gonna stomp the monthly comp, gonna rip it to shreds, like a white boy wearing his hair in dreads, with the ball cap, t-shirt, sneakers by Keds™ wanna throw down the gauntlet and take out the lead, the best beat you break down's the one in your head. Wanna go prime time? Drop some dope ass rhyme? Griels say "the punishment fit the [damn] crime." One day gonna see - got some sekrit fantasy. Y'all think you're the bomb - the one-and-only MC? Wanna be the O G. Gotta put the V to the S to the T. Frontin' hip-hop brickbats commerciality. Just a geek on PC, with an F to the T P, sippin' on an herb tea, typin' lowercase keys, chattin on the IRC, the bladder gonna splatter less you go and take a... Peace out.

Yeah those drums are a bit ham-fisted. Did you time-compress the song? It sounds like it was recorded slower and sped up. I like the lyrics and the the concept, but the music isn't as appealing to me. It's too plain for the great lyrics and the performance isn't that tight. Should be a country song. :)

"alabaster" whyterabbyt
You sure this isn't a cover of Throbbing Gristle? Actually there is a song that the distorted rhythm in yours reminds me of - "In Dark Trees" by Brian Eno. Your rhythmic parts get a little monotonous and out of sync about a minute in to the song but I like the idea. Speaking of Barbies, here's something cool you can do with them:

"Keep It Bumpin'" Freeztar
Nice Brazilian drums. All the elements in here are good, but the mix is isn't quite right. The keyboards and vocals should be lower and the bass and drums more upfront. It's not grooving enough to keep everything bumping yet. The arrangement is too halting. I hate to suggest a more 4-on-the-floor type bassdrum but at least that would keep everything flowing. I think you should sing it in Portuguese too... :)

Now have I officially insulted everyone who entered this month? Can I go vote?

Spot on review you. I agree 100%.

I was down to the wire on this and I didn't have the time I'd like to work on the mix. I also can't seem to learn the bass on my monitors because it never translates well (think I need a sub).

Agreed about the halting. It's hard to see past your own nose sometimes, so I'm happy you pointed that out. Same thing with the flowing comment. This definitly needs some cohesive glue.

Thanks for the very helpful review!

... The drums (which I like best here) are are just doing all kinds of weird stuff and the rest just has to much delay and filtering effects to fit tightly with them. I'd chuck the rest and make yourself a really angular dnb composition with them. You're half way to an Autechre song. Just run the rest backwards through some stomp boxes and chop 'em up. :)
Thanks, You™
