If I post a song even if its copyrighted can someone take it, or the melody, remix it and release it commercially whitout paying me or asking me?
It costs money to sue. You always hear about so and so who wrote britney or madona lyrics 10 years ago and they are just sueing now...
Can I fight back, if I can't afford a lawyer?

Someone can always break the law if they so choose. Doesn't mean they should, but can and should are two different beasts.
You can try to fight back without a lawyer, but it's pretty hard to do. AFAIK, even with a lawyer it is tough to do.

Well, any law can be violated, that's why we have this word 'criminal'.
Copyright means that you have a legal mechanism to control your work, but legal cases require you to prove it. Depending on the case, that may or may not be easy to do. Even if you win damages on a legal case, collecting on those damages isn't always easy.
I'm not saying you can't sue and that you won't win, but that things aren't just simple cut-and-dry. You could win a lawsuit quite easily, too, but lawsuits don't always go the way you want them to. And under the legal system, just because you think you were ripped off doesn't mean that you were.
Bear in mind that most cases where someons sues someone like Madonna that a) they could show a lineage of common exposure to the work, ie the guy had met with Madonna's (or whoever's) people to discuss/present the work, or that b) the guy was a crank out to make a buck.
If you ever have a clear case of copyright violation, there are often legal resources available for people who can't afford a lawyer. Best to look into local services that might help you out if you are really concerned about being ripped off. The only thing I can suggest is that if you are the kind of person inclined to pursue legal matters, than learning about said matters and speaking to an expert (read: a lawyer) is the best way to go.
Also keep in mind that publishing on the web and publishing on a record label, you are equally vulnerable to having someone steal your work.

Twenty five years ago I wrote & recorded a song. Well, noodle-on-a-chord-progression is a better decsription... Some weeks later I heard a song very, very VERY simular on the radio. By no means could it have been copied in either way, time and location did not allow it.
I was simply flattered that a Big Artist made something simular to what I had thought of, and recorded. The sad truth I see now, is that it just was not original enough
So: do not worry too much about laws, just make music you like.

The thing is, we are sitting in a cardboard box on the side of the motorway feeding ourselves with scraps. If someone throws us a bone and takes one of our little trinkets and sells it around the world then our name is spread.
Never fear! If you create an especially glittery trinket the man in a white suit and panama hat will come looking for you in the shanty town and take you to the heart of the Empire. He wants your skill. And all the beautiful people will love you.
But beware! Lest you are tempted by crack, whores and the devil who will corrupt you and throw you to the wolves when you are empty. And never forget your brothers and sisters who lived with you in the shanty town.
