the best I know is energyXT.
It can be easy to use and also very complex.
it´s only 39,-€ / 50$
you can learn all about it in the energyXT forum

VSTi or just audio plugs? Kristal is free but doesn't do synths, just effects.
I'd guess the cheapest FL version would be his best bet. I didn't find it my taste but other say it is easy to learn. $50. But I don't think it records audio?

T2 = $150 = not 'very cheap'.
Does energyXT have a 'basic studio' template or anything? I remember opening it and having to start from scratch to do anything with it, which was confusing. I guess if it did have a noob mode, that would be the best, cheapest, and have the longest legs to grow with for the money.

If you can assume you start with a host that is both easy to use and has the basic tool set - then T2 it is, and cheap compared with buying lots of cheaper apps until you end up with one that works easy as that.braj wrote:T2 = $150 = not 'very cheap'.

it is easy to set up a default song and start it with this, that you dont have to start each time from scratch.
just save your default song and put a link to it on your desktop. Then you can start eXT from there with your default song.

If he's not used to any previous hosts, I'd say taking a look at Podium might be a good idea as well. It's come quite a long way by now, it's my fav host.

thanks I'll have a look at podium later too, I use Logic so hopefully something simple or similar would be handy as i will have to show him how it works! I've tryed a few hosts before but really miss the ease of audio editing in logic.

Unless, of course, he lives e.g. in Germany (still home of Steinberg AFAIK). He might be lucky and find Cubase SE for 129€ (approx. 155$) which is also not exactly cheapDevonB wrote:Cubase SE is $99, and VERY capable.
Cakewalk HomeStudio might be an alternative. It doesn't always have to be Sonar.
