A teacher is a good idea to get basic, basic technique down if you're struggling. I honestly don't think I'd ever have figureed out how to play a barre chord properly if my teacher (I had about 4-5 guitar lessons with my school's resident teacher when I was about 15) hadn't helpfully pointed out that I shouldn't have my thumb hanging out the side of the neck (obviously, you need your thumb on the back of the neck to be able to push the strings down).
