Live...is it for me?

I currently use Tracktion 1. I am interested in Live since people talk it up so much. However, I don't use a lot of live audio or audio clips. Right now, I use Stylus RMX and a bunch of soft samplers to make music...mainly house and jazz-funk. Is Live still worth a look? I am wondering how other people use Live and what types of music they are making.

The Live 5 beta program will open to the general public in the next week or so. I'd highly recommend checking it out for yourself. Or you can download Live 4 now but there are quite a few cool new things in version 5. Try working through the included tutorial and see if you think it suits you.
I don't do any live audio and I very rarely use any loops or clips but I do everything in Live these days. The midi is a little rudimentary compared to Cubase or Logic but it's so much more spontaneous and intuitive I don't mind much.

I've been trying to learn how to write music for a couple years and made little progress. Got Live a couple months ago and things just took off like a rocket. Sent ten tracks to the copyright office today...

What's the point of telluing someone that if they're not a REGISTERED LIVE USER.
You need to be a registered user of V3 or V4 to even access the Beta when it goes general.
It basicly goes from set 500 to all registered LIVE users.
It isn't open to just anyone to try out.
It kind of defeats the point of beta testing and checking for bugs if people Beta Test an application they know nothing about .......

I believe Ableton said you didn't need to be a Live owner to use the Live5 beta when it goes to everyone.
If you have requests for Korg VST features or changes, they are listening at https://support.korguser.net/hc/en-us/requests/new

I just checked the Ableton site for the announcement, but couldn't find the post that said everyone is in on the beta, but I know you could have registered for the newsletter but not be a Live owner and still be one of the 500 beta testers, apparently somne people were a bit annoyed at this.

Hmmmm okay that's changed a bit then
Don't see the point myself unless it's just a marketing exercise.
I still think the first 500 testers SHOULD have been
registered users of Live myself.
I decided not to sign up for the beta this time as I'll never learn P5 V2 properly if I do and I'm happy enough with Live 4 and P5's integration to not bother with upgrading at the moment.
Just watch the forum bog down with all ridiculous "does Live timestretch" , "can I import audio", "what is a .wav file" posts.
Well lets face it a few of them have been surfacing already

Fax,
What do you like about live 4 and P5 V2?
I ask cuz I have live3 and it's a toss up between upgrade to live5 or go for P5 V2...

I guess I'm one of themPete C wrote:I currently use Tracktion 1. I am interested in Live since people talk it up so much.
I moved from Tracktion 1 to Live 4 last year... briefly flirted with Tracktion 2 (long enough to pay for the $20 upgrade), but am now firmly using just Live (and I'm in the beta test for Live 5).
ONe word of advice about the transition from Tracktion to Live... Live is an easier and quicker program to use once you have "got" the concept. It will really save you a lot of time though to run through the included tutorials which download with the demo. They should take under an hour, and will really help you get a feel for how Live works.
Definitely - lots of people use Live for those styles. However, I don't use a lot of live audio or audio clips. Right now, I use Stylus RMX and a bunch of soft samplers to make music...mainly house and jazz-funk. Is Live still worth a look?
Go to the Ableton website and click on "Artists" - there is a really inspiring section where some of Live's "celebrity" users describe how it fits into their way of working.I am wondering how other people use Live and what types of music they are making.
Regarding styles, Live is used by everything from DJs (e.g. Sasha), through Jazz musicians (e.g. John Scofield, George Benson), right through to Film Composers (Klaus Badelt, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc)
Have fun!

If you're willing to handle the problems with Live... then it's the greatest damn app on the face of the earth. Luckily, theres tons of patches so all problems are pretty quickly getting knocked out.
I love how easy it is to edit MIDI note data by hand... Just click and drag. Want to insert data? Alt+click. Want to put data off-time for humanization? Click then press alt and drag. No dealing with Tracktion's absurd paradigm of sheepishly zooming in and out or multiple swatches of tools that do different things that you don't need but still have to click each time you want to do something.
God, I love the Resampling feature so much. That's so unbelievably useful. I couldn't comprehend not being able to sample bits in my track in the amount of time it takes from hitting Record to hitting Stop. No manually bouncing down. A DREAM COME TRUE.
Supposedly the CPU usage is fixed but I haven't noticed it. I max out my Athlon 64 4000+ way to easily, and I don't use many effects or instruments. And my arrangements aren't even that complex. And moving MIDI/Audio clips seems to take forever, like 30 seconds to over a minute on extremely complicated tracks. I reformat my ubercomputer every 3-4 months. Dunno why I have such an issue.
But I couldn't comprehend using any other app. Give it a try and learn the interface. Some may call it "un-orthodox," I call it "evolution." best app evar! aside from bugs

I've tried everything. Live 4 is the most fluid music creation software out there. You have to get it. There's no other way around it. - Orbit-50
