Sampletank 2.1

What happens to the people who bought Sampletank 2XL - not Sampletank 2L - for the sounds before all of this talk started? I bought XL knowing I would get more sounds than the L version, albeit at a higher price. Now it turns out that it looks like I should have just bought L (saved money) so I could get the upgrade for the same price as XL users? Hmm.

I'm fairly sure L owners will have to pay something for the new soundset - but will get the new engine for free.
Since there are so many permutations we could really do with a table of (a) what you bought, (b) when you registered it, (c) which part of 2.1 you get for free, and (d) how much to pay for the rest of 2.1
The variables are then (a) either 2L or 2XL, (b) before of after some particular cutoff date. (c) is either just the engine or the all of it, and (d) is either n/a, $99 or maybe some other figure.
Maybe Squids or Kim could help us out and produce said table and then anyone who has 2L or 2XL could look up their situation in it and figure what they will/wont have to pay for 2.1

The latest information from IK on the 2.1 upgrade paths is April 2005, so pretty recent. There are two groups:
ST2XL users who purchased after January 20th, 2005 (or people who purchased ST2XL from esoundz anytime in 2005) These people will receive a free update to ST2.1 (engine and sounds).
ST2L users, and ST2XL users who have had ST2XL since before 2005. These people get ST2.1 engine upgrade for free, and can purchase the 2.1 sounds upgrade for $99 or possibly less (this price may only be available for a limited time after 2.1 becomes available).
Hope that helps.

If you bought ST2XL before 2005, then you've already been able to use the expanded sound set for a while. That's definitely worth something.ianscott111 wrote:What happens to the people who bought Sampletank 2XL - not Sampletank 2L - for the sounds before all of this talk started? Not directed at you, but in general:
Often I see people complain about upgrade paths. One particular situation that plays itself over and over again is a person buys some gear (can be hardware or software) and soon after the manufacturer releases the next version up. Another (somewhat similar to ST2.1) is when a company offers the same upgrade price to different tiers of previous customers, such as when Steinberg offered the same SX3 upgrade price to SX1 and SX2 users. Another similar situation is when people complain that some software is not transferrable, or requires a transfer fee.
In these cases, it can be easy to focus on the value of the software at end-of-life - what you can gain or save depending on what tier you are at. Sometimes it's easy to forget that the main value in the software is in actually USING it! in the Steinberg example, SX1 and SX2 users can upgrade to SX3 for the same price. Predictably, SX2 users were somewhat upset that their investment in SX2 was worth the same as SX1 at end-of-life. (I even saw some comments from SX2 users that they should not have upgraded from SX1->SX2!). A lot of people were forgetting that the SX2 users actually got to use the additional features in SX2 that weren't in SX1.
There is a similar situation here with IK Multimedia and ST2.1 - if you bought SampleTank2 in 2004, then the 2.1 sounds upgrade is available for a fixed price, regardless of whether you bought ST2XL or ST2L. If you bought ST2XL mid-2004, then you've been able to use the bigger XL soundset for a whole year, whereas ST2L users have had a year of using the smaller L soundset. That is where the real value of any gear is - the value you get from using it.
I hope that helps people get a bit of a better-rounded perspective on the ST2.1 upgrade, and software upgrades in general. The bottom line is: the real value is how you use it! Ultimately, we're all here because we love making music, and these are all tools to achieve that.

Hi Kim,
I have no problem with paying for an upgrade but haven't really seen any details of the additional sounds were will be getting for this outlay. Are you in a position to provide some more information, I am sure that when people can see what they are getting for they $99 that opinions will change.

Upgrades and upgrade prices, always a topic. One veeeery important thing is the the line has to be drawn somewhere. Even Squids/SR has to do it, even though he is veeeery nice to his customers in this kind of matter.
It is obvious that they can't offer free upgrades for the next 3 years or such a thing. So there HAS to be a time line somewhere. Those on the "wrong" side of the line will usually not be very happy, understandable. But Squids has to feed all his emplyees and pay the rent and so forth....
Maybe Squids is willing to give away an extra Didjeridoo sound to everyone who needs to pay the $99 for the upgrade.
As a sign of his goodwill.

Actually, there a ton of ways to get free sounds from us. Coupons, epointz... so, yeah, maybe we'll attach a coupon for downloadable sounds to the upgrade to make it sweeter but only through esoundz can we do that.telebunke wrote:Upgrades and upgrade prices, always a topic. As an owner of Sonic Synth, Sonik Synth 2, Sampletank2 XL and all expansions I'd be very dissapointed, if I had to pay for the contents upgrade...

Squids had said in a previous thread that Platinum members can get the upgrade for free, too.

BTW,,, any announcements about the Platinum benefits you were referring to in that thread??
