...Anyone had this happen to them??

Booted PC up today - no probs, son was opening his hotmail - went to close window and screen blacked, turned PC off and rebooted, only thing is the PC wouldn't boot - wouldn't do anything but turn the fan on!

Phoned my techy mate who came straight over, PC wouldn't boot on first attempt but did on second then Blacked again - have rebooted again and so far there are no probs - PC did tell me it had some updates to install tho (have installed updates) - would that have caused some sort of conflict?

Any clues or ideas why this may have happened??

Ahhh, MY old computer used to do this to me alll the time. It would start and the fan would come on. It would beep, but then nothing happened. After rebooting throughout the day it would finally come on. I never really knew why it did it, but it never fully broke down on me.

is it a via chipset a8v board? I had these blackout reboot problems with a via chipset + ATI videocard, solved by turning the via (asus) mobo into a frisbee....

Hmmm. Last time I had something (slightly) similar, it turned out my videocard was b0rked.

.....even odder stuff happened this morning - got the 'blue screen of death' thing going on - am still convinced that there is some conflict with the XP update - have disabled it now and things are back to normal - not the easiest file to find but fingers crossed it is all sorted now!

I have just had over 200 of them all within half a second of each other!

Did you try booting in Safe Mode? In case you need some notes: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Btw, did I miss what version of wndows you are running?

Maybe an online virus scan wouldn't hurt? Also, try some anti-spyware stuff like CounterSpy. But back everything up FIRST!

Hmmm....Clues: Computer booted fine, Son Checked E-mail, Computer started freaking out.....Sounds like you picked up a Virus perhaps?
