It might be a nice addition to the SampleTank and Sonik Synth 2 sites to allow registered users to upload combi preset files, don't you think ?

Although probably makes more sense for SS2 due to the predictability of the source soundset.

Anyway today I attempted to recreate the 'classic' "Universe" combi from the Korg M1 (going from memory because I sold mine years ago).

Well since I can't post the preset here's how I did it. Choose your favourite choir sound in SS2 - I like "Vocal Textures/Don't Cry" but for a more authentic sound (IIRC) use "Vocal Elements/Misc Vocal Elements/FemChrAh" and increase the Release and Attack times in the volume envelope to taste plus add a delay or reverb effect of your choice. "Don't Cry" didnt need tweaking as it already sounded fine as is.

Next add "African Rattle 1" from the "Perc Elements" as part 2. Add a Delay effect with params thus:
Mode = "Dly LCR"
Feedback = 73%
D.Time = 0.3s
Level = 89
BndWidth = 11.2Khz

That should give the tinkling sound that I seem to remember.

Make both parts respond to same MIDI channel and hopefully the result sounds a bit like "Universe" from the M1. Actually, to enhance the effect, play any chords with a slight hint of delay between each finger :)

This is a good idea. I like it.

you can plonk them here if you want - http://www.sampletankx.com/

i've put a few presets on there myself - i personally would have thought Squids & Co would have pushed the preset sharing idea a bit more, as it's one of Sonic Synth 2's standout creative features coupled with the elements.

i can't remember the guy's name who created the site - he's just known as stxadmin on his site and as stated on the site, Squids gave it the thumbs up, but yeah it's a crying shame the patch-sharing idea hasn't taken off.

Maybe a few epointz contests, say a "soundalike" patch competition would be good, throw in a few expert patch making tutorials by Squids (say, about these macros i keep hearing about :D )to give the idea a further push and who knows what could happen.

As SS2 is well spec'd in 60s/70s sounding patches, it would be great if the patch community were to dig into more eclectic areas - considering how many posts are made on the basis of "how do i get "this" sound", SS2 could function as a great educational tool, allowing users to reverse engineer patchs to great effect.

I'm not sure the site really addresses the issue of where to host the patch files. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like its a forum about sharing patches and no more than that.

Post

that's correct - no hosting, just a listing. though really with the amount of free hosting sites around, it's not much of an issue - just a pain with reliablity and b/w issues etc. However if a site incorporated hosting of patches to centralise all the issues involved, wouldn't that (e)sound(z) like a great idea? :wink:

I agree. That sounds like something that would put some spark into the Sonik Elementz site,,,with all the new users, maybe there would be more interest. I don't know if we can host things on the site, but Robert posted a few over there.
