The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

A good 70% of what I do never gets heard - much never even gets recorded. Of the remaining 30%, about half is intended for release and the other half is privately issued to certain people. But even if none of it ever got heard I wouldn't stop doing it.

Pretty much no one but me has heard the music I've made from 1978 - 1999.

I had a mp3.com site from August '99 until it went belly up. So anything from that point until my first post here went unheard by human ears.

Check out Until the Isban Moon. I did this piece--all 24:19 minutes of it--in 1996 and until I posted the digitally remastered version at audioshots, it had only been heard by about 12 people, all of them personal friends.

If you truly do music as an art, then like all art its creation is about an interaction between the composer/performer and the work in creation, not about garnering public appreciation for your genius.

I would still carry on, although I won't deny that I get pleasure from sharing my work, even if nobody else does

there's a continuing struggle with uncertainty

working on a piece one is unsure if it's good, better, best or 'other' esp. the longer one works on it. at some point maybe it seems pretty good and it'd be nice to know what somebody else thinks.

i've had it play all ways. somebody gushes at a piece and i'm still going to do another. somebody has this completely blank look and says something 'polite' like wow that was some deep bass, but i can tell they don't 'get it' and i'm still going to do another.
it's one of my healthier compulsions and there's still plenty to learn.
i'm lucky that there are a few people who 'get' what i'm about and offer a little bit of guidance to help things move along in that direction. usually little suggestions that end up really bringing a piece together. that sort of connection is rare and much appreciated.
if that never happened i'd probably keep making new pieces, but stumble around a lot more. and cater for some approval -- it's so human to want that sort of attention, but i'd probably still make another piece.
sometimes i put something together and it'll be months before i do something that comes together that well again. i have to allow myself to make some 'less satisfying' pieces in between

I can't imagine it being any other way. I just don't think I'm equipped to write music for anyone else. Its certainly not important to me that anyone else hears it, as long as I can get up on stage and belt it out I don't care whether there is anyone there to hear it or not [probably just as well or I'd be a deeply unhappy man].

I do 'it' cause the voices in my head tell me to....

Finding a forum to annoy others with 'it' was by pure accident...
