They haven't had a site update for something like a year, and the SV-719 Gate is still "coming soon"? What's up with this, anyone???

Post

I bet it's going to be one hell of a gate though :) .
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

All right, I just got in contact with their customer service. Seems like they have some announcements to make later this year, including SV-719. So there you have it...

And this is meant to make us feel secure about buying challenge/response software ... how?

Exactly how does Challenge/Response work? And what are the pro/cons about it?

You get one code with the product, then you install the program and it mixes and mingles with you PC or Mac and it generates a "challenge" code, which you then put into the company website, or in some cases you can call, and it either emails you a code or a link to a keyfile. That's the response code and you have to put that into your machine before the plug is ulocked.

This sucks for several reasons:

1. It's a big pain in the buttock region.

2. You can end up getting a new reg (initial) code generated by your plug for various reasons, requiring a new challenge code and a new response code. The most common reason is getting a new machine, a new system drive, or having to reformat your existing drive because of some kind of meltdown, but I've had it happen just from doing a Win XP system restore.

It's a pain because every time you have to go through the same routine and of course they may give you a hard time and think you're distributing copies of the plug.

3. The company could go out of business and not be around to issue new response codes, but I haven't heard of too many horror stories of this happening yet.

thanks! This makes it all clear.

Just to clarify for anyone not familiar with the sonalksis plugins, they do not use challenge/ response copy protection.

and IF this ever happens to me, i will definetly be searching for a not-so-legit copy.

Seems to me they would make every effort to make sure all license holders just get a single key they can use permanently before they close the doors completely.

One very good reason to stay on the mailing list of any companies who's software you own that's challenge/response.

Looks like Sonalksis use a registration code, instead of challenge/response. So that makes them officially good guys - although they are bloody expensive. I have so much money tied up in software, and i'm reluctant to spend any more if any form of challenge/response is involved. Stagnant websites give me the creeps - you never know when a developer is going to cease trading. Anyway - sorry for any confusion - I would be happy to buy from these guys, knowing that I should at least be able to use the product as long as I don't lose the registration key.

well even if it was challenge & response, arturmeinild appeared to got in touch with them within 15 minutes(if you look at the times of his posts) even though their website was stagnant for a year.
