Dark Orchestral Electronic Music?

Hey,
I have just started mixing my interests of electronic (in the generic sense) and dark music. I play drums for a dark metal/rock band and I sing for one also (in a Marilyn Manson kinda way), but on the side a huge love of mine is dance music, techno... Moby, Prodigy and such. Anyways, with my hugely diverse intake of music (anything from Robbie Williams (I know I shouldn't admit that) to Marilyn Manson to Prodigy to Milk Inc.) I was thinking of mixing two of my main interests, dark and evil with 'electronic', and after playing with a string SoundFont for the first time, I want to get really into an orchestral side but still with lyrics and such. Getting to the point, I was wondering if anyone can suggest some really good composers of 'evil' orchestral music, some really good 'dark' electronic musicians, and again, maybe a hybrid between the two. I think it would be good to get some inspiration, ideas, and an understanding of what's out there, but really don't know of any names of those 'in the scene'.
Any input?
...thanx

For dark classical:
Richard Wagner: especially Siegfried's Death and Funeral Music, from The Ring (without words).
Carl Orff: Carmina Burana, especially the introduction, Oh Fortuna. I suggest the version conducted by Robert Shaw and performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
You could also give a listen to Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor. As an interesting exercise, try not to think of it as being strictly an organ piece. Imagine it played with other instruments entirely, possibly a complete orchestra. There should be plenty of room for darkness and drama there.
take care,
McLilith

Weird.. I'm making some aggressive symphonic based industrial music. Actually, I'm trying to give every song it's own theme, like the "baroque song" the "early medieval song" the "middle east song" the "choral song" etc. Anyway, to add....
Wojciech Kilar "Bram Stoker's Dracula Soundtrack" - This is exactly what you're looking for.
Basil Poledouris "Conan The Barbarian Soundtrack" - Especially Riders Of Doom.
Havergal Brian "Symphony No. 1" - Required a symphony so huge it couldn't be recorded until recently. Orchestra of almost 200 players. "The biggest, grandest, and most monumental symphony ever written." - Allmusic Guide
Cool use of orchestral samples... try Frontline Assembly "Prophecy" off the Implode album. I think the samples were taken from Alien Resurrection.

Not really Evil but take a listen to a piece I wrote which is a suite of dark techno and ambient with a fusion of orchestral and electro.
It's called 'A New Beginning'.
Listen to it here : www.handheldsound.com/hear.htm
(under orchestral)
Perhaps it will give you some inspiration

There's a lot of classical music listed here
and Aphex twin, did he do anything "orchestral"???
I don't know about dark/evil but contemporary film composers like Harry Gregson-Williams and Trevor Rabin are very good at mixing orchestral with electronic.

Lots of stuff going back nearly two decades at http://www.coldmeat.se that may fit the bill. Check In Slaughter Natives in particular.
You may also want to check some of Laibach's recordings from the mid 80's - 'Krst Pod Triglavom', 'Nova Akropola' and, if you can find it, the sadly out of print 'Ein Schausspieler'.

For recent dancey electronic/'orchestral' hybrids, try:
Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto: Vrioon
Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto: Insen
Murcof: Martes

I can't believe that I forgot to mention that one. Vampire Hunters is a favorite track of mine, but there are other nice pieces on that soundtrack as well.Innominandum wrote:Wojciech Kilar "Bram Stoker's Dracula Soundtrack" - This is exactly what you're looking for.
As for mixing classical with other genres, you might want to check out the work that Michael Kamen did with various rock acts, including Pink Floyd and Metallica.
