Yeah, we are getting there, but we still have a few generations to go I think.Lady J wrote:More and more we are all a mixture. I like the Tiger Woods approach to this stuff. Just make up words to describe ourselves.
There has been tremendous progress even since I was growing up.
In school, when you had to fill in the 'select one' for ethnicity bubbles in school, 'mixed' wasn't even an option. We got to be the infamous 'other'
Also, tolerance has grown immensely, I can still remember when "Jungle Fever" came out, and I came home from school to a talk show where both whites and blacks were arguing that interracial babies were worse then dirt.. WHOAAAA nice self-esteem booster there.
I think awareness is growing tho, we're finally starting to see support groups spring up in colleges and high schools.
Hopefully by the time me and my Chinese gf-soon-to-be-fiancee have kids, I can tell them these kind of stories and laugh

If it sounds good it is good.

Check the fine William Bennett (Whitehouse)-curated compilation 'Extreme Music from Africa' for a selection of music from the new African avant-garde/noise electronics scene.

Not really electronic, but nonetheless pushing it with homemade electric mbiras and amps made from scavenged car parts, are Konono No.1.
Then there's the guy behind Irdial Discs and the Conet Project.
Dean Dennis of ClockDVA and other, lesser known groups.
And of course, Jeff Mills, Rob Hood, Mike Banks (who has made some very pertinent, and mostly negative, comments about the dominance of hip hop and r&b in the US), Kenny Larkin, Claude Young and pretty much the whole Detroit/Chicago techno scene.
But why reinforce borders in the first place?

Indeed. Just about everyone you mentioned is breaking them down (and have been for decades).dystonia_ek wrote:Check the fine William Bennett (Whitehouse)-curated compilation 'Extreme Music from Africa' for a selection of music from the new African avant-garde/noise electronics scene.

I saw Konono No. 1 live several years ago and it was a great experience. The were using The Ex' amps and the result was some of the noisiest and most hypnotic things I've heard/seen/felt.
There's something immensely visceral about 4 distorted sansa's at 100 dB going on for two hours.

Pop music delenda est.

Not a bad point actually. I couldn't help notice that when I worked at the Download 2005 festival that the audience were predominantly white, and this was a metal festival.WillieJenkins wrote:I don't think so necc... It's Live 8 in Hyde Park and Gay Pride in Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square. How's that for diversity. It's going to be a fantastic day of music and celebration in central London today. I'm off there right now for the Drag Idol finals in Leicester Square - Kate Winslet is comparing - something for everyone then.
