My apologies to everyone! I was an idiot yesterday to be so critical. Even though I can't (or won't) dance, I do like music with rhythm so there is hope for me this month. Baroque and Classical forms, Jazz and ballet are seminal. I do know ballet music very well and I love Stravinsky's Firebird, Petrouska and Right on The Rite of Spring are old my favorite ballet scores as is Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe which I used to listen to endlessly - I still have 6 different recordings. Sinistre Footware and Lumpy Gravy are well ingrained on my psyche.

I think it is that ubiquitous thumping bass drum that drives me nuts. Why? Why? Why? Why? Are people that hard of hearing?

I still view recreational dance from the perspective that FZ gave us in Dancing Fool. That song still nails it for me and defines the way I see Disco or whatever has replaced it. Exhibitionist narcissism and potential social suicide for the likes of me.

Ouch. I just tripped over my left foot.

Good one Hink!

I wanted to include my dancing girls with this months entry, but I know how contraversial it is to do so, so instead of posting the pic, I'll post a link. Then you can decide whether to ignore it or not.

I did a great show with these ladies, and lots of others... a few more pics here -

Hmmm ... judging from the 1st four entries already, this contest may be even harder to judge than usual!

I'm glad that note appeared about contest rules. Clears up how I can react / vote, rather than just leaving it all up to mods. And I do think it's fair to point out when a tune seems clearly not done for the contest. There was one last month I was tempted to mention, but I liked it a lot, so I let it ride, not being sure what the policy is on pointing things out.

I never get reviews done unless I start early. So here we go with the usual subjective waffle. Feel free to disregard.

Lady J/Jump and Wind - Grooves along well. In this genre, with drums to the forefront, a bit more variation to individual drum hits would always be welcome, to stop the loop patterns becoming too obvious. Nice cutout at 0:42, and an interesting papery feel to the mix. The vocals are a good idea, but now you've reverted to your previous vocalist, the distracting sibilance problem has returned. I've come across this in maybe three or four of your songs, so I guess it's either an intentional effect, or a problem you can't yet fix, but it distances me a bit. Maybe you could borrow the mic used for Mr Right Now, if it's a mic quality issue. Pleasantly fidgety track. (Disappointingly obvious snippery from a longer song, though.)

jamesb/MooShoo - Has a warm assurance to it. Quality, low-key music-making, but a surprising response to the theme. Doesn't shout for attention, which might actually make it stand out in what will presumably be an energetic month. Nice crusty edge to the rhodes. Obviously not designed for frantic dancefloor activity, more a swaying lovers kind of thing. Dance music for relaxed people who don't want to break a sweat.

Wopelka/Cave Hall Electro Menuet - Wow. Lovely. Feels spontaneous yet composed. Occasionally has a 'found sound' quality that brings to mind one of Matmos's cut-up compositions, or something in that vein. Ixox's flute stands up well in the spotlight. And how did you get those subliminal twisty plucked strings? An amazing range of disparate sounds brought together into an organic whole. Got me twitching in all the right places. I like this very much.

RichieBee/Dance to This - Nice brass build-up at the start. Slightly synthetic samples, but nothing distracting - maybe increasing the attack speed would give the brass a bit more bite. Puts me in mind of those old TV cop shows with funky disco title sequences. Likeable percussion fills. Mixing the kick drum and bass a bit higher mightn't hurt in the dancefloor stakes. Can't quite catch all the lyrics in the 0:55 section. If it's 'Dance to this, I'm broken' then I'm intrigued.

Barnadine, thanks for your reviews.

Would you mind to post them in my REVIEWS Thread, too? thanks! :D

Great idea Wopelka -- it makes it convenient for everyone :)

Thanks a lot, i'm glad you like it. i may lose some admiration admiting that the strings are a sample from one bar of some Händel's recorded composition. The Cello is also one bar taken from some Bach's Suite. However, the samples have been sliced and tweaked in such a way they look as new material. in case some would wonder, the rest is entirely mine. but maybe you were talking about the discrete, crazy one string delirium? it's meself and my guitar. i didn't know the Matmos, but i've just visited their web-site and it looks very promising. cheers.

So now there's three threads related to this month's contest and I don't seem to be receiving any more of my KvR notices...

RichieBee, are you in those pictures? They look like a lot of people having a pretty good time. I take it that's the musical Chicago, not the windy city itself... :)
