Just search for some classic 80's drum machine samples (ie.- TR-808, SP-12, Oberheim DMX, etc.). The NuSofting DK+ plugin has a good range of kits with these kinds of sounds.

Difficult to say but you might want to take a look at EMU SP1200 or Akai MPC60 samples (Try googling). I'm guessing that one of these machines would probably be responsible :)

You want the Oberheim DMX sounds. They have those samples in Linplug RM-IV, and I'm sure you can find the samples in other places as well. That drum machine was responsible for SOOO many more of the great sounds of the actual eighties than the oh so overused these days 808/909 really ever were. Other examples of users include Prince (along with Simmons Drum Pads), and another NYC 80s hip hop act, you may have heard of them, I think they were called the Beastie Boys, that is, if I'm not mistaken.
Um....

Naw, its tricky was an oberheim DX or SCI drumtraks, I would guess its the latter as the SCI could sync to the TR-808 that could bwas used so heavily on the "raising hell" album. Sucker MCs came out in 83, so it was either a linndrum or a SCI...

They didnt move to drum samplers until "tougher than leather" it sounds like it was likely an mpc-60...

sp12's are still very much in use today (yes the 8 bit one). Many hip hop producers load samples through their sp12's before playing them on their mpc's. It adds that gritty raw effect, and many swear by it. A drum sampler and amplitude might be a better, more flexible, and cheaper option though. Even free amp sims or distortion plugins....just go easy on the distortion. It can be done without any hardware other than a computer, so i would experiment before forking out the cash for some hardware when the computer can do the same thing. That money could probably be spent on more important stuff.

Also sometimes you can just find certain samples from vintage drum machines. They are all over the web, but rarely the exact sound I'm looking for. The new Computer Music Magazine has the theme of Hip Hop. There's likely to be some usefull samples in that. If all else fails....go crate digging. Many hip hop drums are sampled from good old vinyl.

No wonder. The Beastie Boys only made one album, then they split due to low record sales, AFAIK.

For the real sound of a running DMC, you can't beat a car from DeLorean Motor Company.
