I'm thinking of buying Ethno World 2. Does anybody use it? How does it sound? http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/det ... sku=BS-379

I don't have the full thing but I have Pro Samples Vol 52, which comes from that series. The quality of the samples is very good. My favorite sounds in this part of the collection are the mixed gongs and bowls. Take a listent to Gamma Melt 3 on my site. All the percussions came from this sample collection. The full collection is probably pretty amazing. Steep price, though.

It is out only in Europe, as far as I am aware.

Did you have to eq any of the samples?

I may just wait for Ethno World 3 to hit the states...

No, there wasn't any EQ on the samples, though there were some FX--just GlaceVerb I think. I'm at work so I'm not sure what was on the percussion tracks.

Ethno World 2 is great! Lots of instruments, not always the obvious choices and well performed. I also ordered the EW 3 giga upgrade yesterday which has new instruments only (50 € / 60 $), that's in Europe only at the moment...

Also, if you don't like mixing you'll find EW2 pretty easy in use. Some of the placement has been done for the user, which can of course be altered using panning.

RA is a more comprehensive library in that it covers more sampling, velocity layers, round robin samples, and articulations per instrument. EW3 does represent a large range of instruments though, inculding a few RA doesn't have. I think RA would be the better choice if you're really looking for in-depth ethnic sounds - I think this is more an issue of "you get what you pay for".

I just picked up RA. I guess I'm wondering what this would provide that RA doesn't. It sounds like the answer is basically a bunch of loops and phrases as well as a few instruments.

How does this compare to something like Heart of Asia or World Winds (which I also have)? It sounds like the sampling quality (articulations, layers, etc) may be more inline with that than something more modern like RA. Is that correct? Maybe I already have the other instruments from some of my older Akai discs...

rockin1, that would be correct. But if you have RA you shouldn't need EW3, there's a lot of redundancy that you'd be shelling out your hard earned money for.

Heart of Asia is not just limited to instrumental stuff. While it has multisamples, they are not as extensive as RA or EW3. There are lots of phrases and vocal parts, which, while magnificently done, you have probably heard quite a few times by now in films, TV, and games (like some of the shakuhachi riffs).

I haven't used World Winds so I can't offer any help regarding that.
