just ordered the studio projects c1. gonna use it with my 1820m`s pres, but i know they aren´t the best. any budget recommendation for a preamp, preferrably already proven as a good combination with the c1?

Look at the VTB-1, also by Studio Projects.
An idiot on Set Theory:

Good advice. The VTB-1 would be a nice alternative to the more clinical 1820m pres. You might also check out the Presonus TubePre, also about $100 and good sound for the money.

I don't like the pre's in the 1820M that much, but I am not saying that they are bad at all. It's is just that the sound is kind of soft. Honestly. I am an amateur, but I noticed it while tracking drums and I had miked the snare with an SM57 going into one of the 1820M pre's. I than tried Behringer's 2200 pre amps and the transients were better.
Any thoughts on this?
