Any Live users that use Stylus?

I just bought Live and I already own Stylus RMX. It seems to me that Live has features built-in that are geared toward loops and audio clips, rather than Stylus's plug-in approach. It seems so easy to audition audio loops in the Live environment. Since, I don't care for the core library in RMX I was thinking about selling it and going all loops for beats. Is that a mistake? Any suggestions?

If you don't care for the core, selling wouldn't be a bad idea (though I enjoy Rexing files and hearing RMX mess them about), especially if you have lots of loops. Personally, I have both and wouldn't sell either but if forced I would begrudgingly sell RMX first.

I agree w/ proletkult, the chaos features of RMX make it worthwhile despite the workflow differences.
I often record RMX tracks in Live while screwing around with the loops that I am planning to use, and then turn favorite parts of the resulting tracks into loops. Not too much work, and unique beats as a result.

There are tons of things that RMX does that are very complimentary to Live....they are actually a great marriage and a lot of people use both in effective ways. Live is a great host for RMX.
Live is certainly very easy and fast with any audio files, but there is also a trade-off in sound quality...especially as you go slower in tempo, due to the real-time time stretching that Live uses. RMX definitely has a higher level of sound quality due to the SAGE/Groove Control technology that it uses that you can hear in this example:

Sounds like it would be a good idea to spend some more time with RMX discovering all that it can do. There's a whole bunch of cool stuff that's available only in the RMX world...and more coming too!
I'm curious too? Did you really check out all 10,000 sounds in the Sound Menus directory? How about the 3,000 Kit modules? The hundreds of multis? Explored what you can do with Edit Groups and the FX racks...the Chaos Designer? Groove Menu MIDI mode? SAGE Xpanders?
That's a huge amount of stuff to throw away.....RMX has a very wide variety of users and there are loads of techniques and sounds for just about any musical application. This is pretty evident on the demos page: http://www.spectrasonics.net/instrument ... demos.html
There's a bunch of new tutorials and support stuff coming soon too....including a Live 5+RMX tutorial!

I use RMX with Live a lot and really love it. I have several of the RMX expansion packs, too, which adds to the ability to create some pretty original grooves. With Live 5 it looks like you will be able to freeze your midi clips, effectively creating audio clips out of RMX. That might be a good solution.

have you used kit mode at all? If not, do yourself a favor and make some custom kits then program some of your own beats that fit exactly how you want into your track.
do you own Recycle? If so, take some loops from a song your working on, Rex them, then convert/load into RMX. Its a bit of a hassle but TOTALLY worth it.
Hope that helps.

Sorry for being dense...what does this mean? In 4 I can drag midi files from the browser into the arrangement or clip view. Will there be another way to do this?spectrum wrote:Also, Live 5 now has drag and drop of MIDI files...which is a big improvement for RMX users.

Not only that, but I've been using Stylus RMX as an advanced REX player as well.
It's a great way to get those amazing RMX effects on your favorite loops/sounds!
Also, bringing in old drum loops / percussion loops etc and throwing the chaos engine on them is amazing. Even just something like chaos-izing the velocity of the percussion loops gives it such a more authentic feel.

kovacs,
once you've selected the groove you want, there is a spot on the RMX GUI interface itself where you click, and drag/drop the midi file (normally) into the host. Unfortunately in Live4 it did not support dragging midi files from the RMX interface directly into session / arrangement view.
Now in Live5 this is fixed, and it works great

Also, now with resizable tracks in session view, you can easily make all 8 tracks for RMX fix easily on the screen. This used to be a reason why I'd avoid using RMX + Live.
If it sounds good it is good.
