How do I set up my own site?
Lol, I know this is probably to big a question for one post, but what are the broadstrokes? I could probably fuble my way through the design (i have a VERY basic grasp of HTML).
But i have no clue about hosting, maintaining and all that gumph. Im sure it cant be as simple as sending the design to a web hosting site can it?
Bless me with your infinite wisdom KVR!

Write a html page (using Notepad, Word, Frontpage, Dreamweaver...) and upload it to your webspace (using Windows Explorer or a FTP manager app) you rent from a hosting company (like Spe3d's audioshots.com)

Well, aint this the purdy liddle question?
First off you need a host.
I recommend either 1 and 1 or Audioshots, but I guarantee someone will come along and tell you they know somewhere better.
Set up your account and domain name, set up your ftp folder, design your site, upload it and all images and mp3s to your ftp folder.
Make sure your domain name points to your host as well, so you have an http address.
Actually, sod it. I'm really over tired so may not make a lot of sense right now... but there's enough there to research/ask questions about/get started on.
If you have html knowledge you should be able to design pages ok - it's then just a case of updating them when ready.
Depending on the type of site you want to set up of course.
I mean, will it be dynamic? Basic? Selling stuff? A home for your tunes? A drug information service? Or what?
Anyway, good luck. There're others here with way more knowledge than me anyway.

You get ftp facilities through your host provider.tee boy wrote:Right, so I need a FTP program? Not used one of those before, but I'll have a mooch.
Thanks!
If you have XP, you can set it up for access through 'My Network Places'. If not, there are dozens of free ftp managers and 1 and 1, for instance, have an easy to use built-in one.

Oh, also I bet you can guess the next question!
Where can i find good reliable FREE webspace? I believe Audioshots has stopped its free service (which is a damn shame imo, Audioshots is great).

Glassback,
Thanks for the advice fella. Right now Im happy to have a cheap as chips site just to upload my stuff to. With time I'd like to update it an make it a bit fancier. But nothing serious.
I say I have HTML experience. I have to reiterate that this is very small. Im learning to program Basic and C, so I figured I might as well sort this out while my brains in gear!
What do you think of these programs that help you design sites? I did one in Macromedia Director once, but Im sure this isnt the idea app for the job.

http://www.google.com
or
http://www.dorumalaia.com/links.htm - the list on this site used to be massive - it's a shadow of its former glory. Indicative of the times, I fear.

there's a site that lists free hosts (including user reviews regarding reliability), just Google for it, but beware:tee boy wrote:Where can i find good reliable FREE webspace?
- hosts that don't allow mp3s at all (cause of copyright)
- free webspace that comes with lots of pop-up ads
I went for Audioshots too and I'm glad so.
You could also try PanicNow though, it's donationware and the guy behind it frequents KvR.
I plain forgot about that option when I joined Audioshots.
