There is another incarnation of Stepbeater, possibly an earlier one with some fewer features, called Stepchild. I think that version worked for me in Sonar 3.1.1. They were made to work in traction, and I found Stepchild on a site that had many plugs that were developed for use in Traction.
Here's the link to the kvr entry for Stepchild - http://www.kvraudio.com/get/675.html.
I'm not at my home computer, so I'm not sure, but you might have to use the VST adaptor software that came with Sonar and set the plugin to be used as a DXi in order to sync with the host. I'm sure someone else here can give you more definite information on that and correct me if I'm mistaken.

I'm pretty close to what tranceglobal said. I set Sonar to loop a measure or two and build my pattern. Then I save that pattern, copy it to a new measure, then makes edits. Doing this I build maybe 10 variations. Once I have most of the drum patterns I will use I just paint them in where I want. Very simple. Especially since once I complete the song I can go back and edit individual measures to give some variety. You can also seperate bass drum, hi-hat and a few other instruments into seperate MIDI tracks, then paint those parts in seperately and get more variation. Sort of like working with loops in Acid or Live, except it is still MIDI patterns that can be easily edited.

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

sorry to be a pain in the arse.
just downloaded stepchild and it looks perfect for the job, but I cant seem to get it working right. Ok I can drag the patterns to, say, a battery MIDI track but I cant figure how to preview in real time.
Using Sonar, I have a stepchild midi track, outputted to a stepchild dxi track. Do I output from the midi track to battery? or what? Sorry, Im just not gettin this thing.
