Stop guessing and check with the aforementioned app! :P
I just did... and even files that I couldn't really hear a differance in, had slight differances.
I tried now compressing a folder of 20+ wave files and decompressing it into another folder.
No differences were found doing a bit by bit comparsion between the files.
Which version of WinRar do you use?

Yeah, I just compared a 70MB wav file compressed with the latest beta with the original and they match perfectly.. Be interested to see if someone else could reproduce the problem..

I'm highly skeptical that any versions of rar don't produce 100% identical input/output files. I've rar'ed literally thousands of wavs and the decompression is lossless.

However, I have heard of instances of such behaviour if your computer is not stable. ie. if you have bad ram, or are overclocking, there is a possibility the initial archives RAR constructs are corrupted to begin with.

Ive just been trying to reproduce the problem as well, coz I don't have the files anymore. But I said, it doesn't happen that often, but when it does, its about three out of twelve files in the archive. (not one quarter, coz it's only happened with more then a couple of files)

I've got the latest winrar.... umm, 3.5

What's overclocking??? sorri.

Running your CPU faster than its rated speed.

And I agree, RAR really shouldn't cause any changes at all. I strongly suspect something else is at the root of the problem, not RAR itself.

Well, my computer used to be really dodgy (I thought it was okay now though)

I don't know...

Okay, if you want to be sure of your observation, this is the way to do it. Download this app:

This will let you compare, if there is a difference, it will be known through this method.

you should download Prime95
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm
and run it under 'torture test' overnight.

If you have any errors in the morning, your cpu, memory, or mainboard are likely either defective or overheating.

If, on the other paw, in the morning you find a smoking crater where your computer was, you'll KNOW it was overheating. :-}

thanx. i did try with an app mentioned above, and it said it they were differant. but every one here seems to really think there aint a problem,. so i guess it probly is my computer, or just an error, not winrar, i thought ive noticed a bit over the years, but i could be wrong.
