I heard about this a while ago through the analogue heaven list, where it seemed generally agreed that the best way to wish him well was to do so silently to one's self, and leave the family to deal with it themselves

Same here, but the family has set up the caring site themselves, and seem to at least allow the sharing of best wishes and encouragement. All of us should be of good conscience, bear in mind the difficult time for their family, and not over-intrude.
