Apart from open strings, what notes would you sample and why, and how would you map them afterwards so they sounded correct?

Post

Depends on what the samples are for...

If it's for chords or broken chord pluck patterns, you'll want to stick to sampling notes from the base of the neck. If it's for solo work you'll want to sample notes from higher up on the neck on all strings to get the right timbre. It does make a difference.

These are the notes that I usually sample when doing a simple project:

E string: E, F#, G#
A string: A, B, C#
D string: D, E, F#
G string: G, A
B string: B, C#, D#
E string: E, F#, G#, A#, etc. up by whole tones

And then map to sound good to your ears. Remember, when you have a note which is from a sample lower than the note, it has a brighter sound, whereas if your note in the note range is lower than the root note, it has a deeper sound.

I was thinking of notes for plucked work in a Sampler.

Also, is there a decent VST tuner about, free?

I use C-Tuner. Admittedly I don't know of any alternatives, but this does the job just fine.

Some of the old versions of Cakewalk came with a great tuner... It's really accurate, but I'm pretty sure it's not in Sonar. Too bad. I used it often.

There also used to be G-Tuner, but its stand-alone and not VST. For a tuner that should not be a big issue.

C-tuner, I think it is the only vst-one and it is perfect. I use it all the time when I´m making a sampled instrument. Also for my guitar customizing. Don´t look any further... .. .

Cheers, got that now.

The reason i asked is cos im getting a new soundcard tonight, on loan from the jath man, and there is an old honer guitar lying around, so i thought i'd have a go at sampling it :)

Anybody ever heard of acoustic steel samples with DADGAD tuning?

Open tuning has such a nice ring to it - all those resonating harmonics ... mmmm 8)

I don't think the guitar lends itself for sampling, better to play it. I sampled my electric bass(only the E string}, and it came out better than some of the free ones available for download. I think if your going to use samples, it helps if you sample some of your own things.

That happens to be a sampled Guitar and Bass.... And I happen to make my living at sampling things like that so i beg to differ with that thaught. Of course playing a real one will get you a great sound but these days there are lots of things we can do with samples and layers and splits etc. Alot of guys can not play a real one for the life of them, yet they can make real sounding tracks with samples.
