Better hope you have nicely musical resonance to your shells.
I like the potential in the material, but it's not the best way to mic drums.

Well if you can believe the company making them, "The sound is more natural than that obtained using microphones."kaden wrote:Better hope you have nicely musical resonance to your shells.

Yeah, but where's the sound of the heads? Kaden's right too, if the shells sound like garbage so will this. This is like a piezo for drums, and we all know how great they work on acoustic guitars. Also do you listen to drum shells only? No. There's so many other factors at work here that I doubt that this will sound decent at all for anything other than sound reinforcement where it could come in quite handy.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

This particular tech? Of course not. I do, however, have a pretty good working knowledge of acoustic drums.I'm assuming you've tried it then Kaden.
They sound best from the outside, and recording the air that they move is the best way to capture that sound. Makes isolation a bitch, but that's life.

i installed one of the under saddle b-band pickups in a customers guitar once, several years ago. it was fantastic...by far the most natural acoustic pickup i've ever heard. i liked it better than the mini mics i've heard too. (the ones that are somtimes installed inside of an acoustic.)
the best part is that it sounds nothing like a peizo. no brashness, no clack, no tin, no plink. just a nice natural sound. before this i had always recommended either fishman or LR baggs but b-band beats them by miles. no question.
it was also easier to install too. i had no trouble getting the string-to-string volume even, its far less fragile than a peizo pickup, and its so thin that i didnt even have to sand down the saddle. it barely changed the string height at all.
ever since then, i've been wanting to build a semi hollow fretless bass just so i can install a b-band into it and see what its like.

Well, I'm not a drummer so this tech has no impact on me, I just thought it was interesting. Unlike you and Kaden, I'll reserve judgement until I actually hear them.Funkybot wrote:Yeah, but where's the sound of the heads? Kaden's right too, if the shells sound like garbage so will this...

their all tools, mebbe they work in some situations, mebbe they dont. does everyone mic their drums the same for *every* session?. Im all for new tools...

New tools are always cool, but this technology should not be viewed as a panacea.
Assuming you actually want to reproduce the sound that your drums make, internal mic'ing (regardless of how good the tech involved is) is emphatically not the way to achieve this. There's a reason that the May EA system isn't an industry standard...
