i'm sitting here and that song "metro" by berlin is on...they ain't no kraftwerk, but with the stereo speakers and such, not too bad... i could hear all the synths...
i always loved a few electro pop tunes:
fred vom jupiter-die dorus und die marinas (or something)
ricky's hand (and once i heard insecticide)-fad gadget
lots of der plan & pyrolator
i feel love-donna summer (and what's his name)
pop music-m
hell, i love in the song "you sexy thing" how they run the conga drums through a (probably) moog filter...
i love those two singles by the flying lizards "money" and "summertime blues"
a fairly big cult hit (escpecially in dance mixes) that i f**king love is liasons dangerous..(french singer/some guy from daf/some chick), that was one of my favorite records...
i forgot "der mussolinl" by daf...can't forget that...
my wife (r.i.p.) loved gary numan, my favorite was always "down in the park",not really what i'm talking about, but a good synth string sound (polymoog?)
and obviously most kraftwerk....
it's a little hard for me to wrap my head around that there doesn't seem to be more people who dig this stuff, people don't seem to be into this era but are into synths...i always hear depeche mode but besides "i just can't get enough" i just don't get it...something about the vox, i guess...same with the human league, i like a few songs okay...alright now ..."only after dark" is great, but they didn't write that one...i do like those few hits from "dare" but not like the way i like my electro-pop, it almost seems more part of "new wave" of the '80's, the way later devo (devo rules in my book, first two albums, just not "electro pop", more their own thing) or blondie (or berlin) does...
it seems the "electro pop" song died somewhere along the way.... lots of synth music came out, it got real lame at some point imo (DM) and it turned more into dance....and then into rave, "techno" -i quote because for me, techno was a descriptive term that turned into a genre, the same way "grunge" went, for example Killdozer would be described as "slow, rock, grungy, kinda Neil Young '70's style, with a punk edge" and then grunge was a genre... techno (in Chicago) meant that it was more electronic sounding than the more popular House sound(at the time i didn't even know what a 303 was)...
i have no end to this so i say...

It never really died. It just passed from pop music consciousness and went underground. There is still a large synthpop scene today.
You could do worse than to poke around A Different Drum and pick up a few of their sampler CDs:

Yes ross, I love electro-pop as well. Fad gadget was a wonderful group, all of their albums were solid gold, imho.
I also enjoyed when funk started playing in electro's sandbox: Zapp and Rodger, Ohio players, the gap band- their influences are everywhere now.
it's a shame that the current crop of electro-pop is so...derivative of the tunes of old. Fischerspooner has had some commercial success, but I find their creativity seriously lacking.
the group Adult, though, is fabulous. minimalism and strident tones, desperation and self-control; all the hallmarks of the good electro are there.
yeah, i don't know how to end that thought, either...

Electro pop is still here but I do fondly remember :
New Life by Depeche Mode
Dare (album) by Human League
I would not call Tubeway Army/Numan electro pop but more of an influence using synths (check out Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon and you will find there is a sound still based around trad bass, guitar and drums)

there's a song from the late '90s or so, can't ever quite remember the artist or name, all synth funk w/ rap in the middle, girl singer...oh yeah it's called "Touch It"..good electro-funk...
i'll think more later perhaps...
i have a comp lp around here somewhere from the '80s called "Machines" that has a lot of the songs mentioned, a good non- album one by Pil, "Pied Piper" w/ Wobble, one of my favorite bass players....ok off topic starting..

AMAZING! As i read this I am remaking Metro right now in a 00's elctroclash style (not hard since that song almost represents the same style)..
For an example of my other work in this area listen to:
I Lost My Robot

Also for some modern synthpop ish stuff check out A Touch of Class records. A little label run by a friend of a friend, Oliver Strumm.

but does psycho radio count as electro-pop? if the phrase is used literally, maybe they are. psycho radio is contemporary pop made with electronic instruments...
but their music really has more in common with britney spears and eiffel 65 than kraftwerk. kinda disney.
I wonder if this is a case of pop eating itself.

do Magnetic Fields count? nice retro equipment list...
and nice to see Killdozer mentioned on KVR! don't really see the description though... maybe if you added "and your finger pressing down on the vinyl" then it would be more accurate...
