Shuffle/Swing Tips?

Hello.

I use a small amount of swing on my beats from time to time, but never use it on anything else. I gather that some folks will apply swing to sequences etc., does anyone have any tips on doing so? I don't mean how to apply it in my sequencer but are there any 'rules' (bad word) to bear in mind? e.g. should I apply the same swing to everything or vary it across frequencies? (I read that BT, yes him :hihi:, applies more swing on lower frequencies as it's less noticeable or something).

I realise that the most obvious thing is to experiment, but if I mess about with quantize templates in my host, although I can see what happens to the midi events, it doesn't seem audibly noticeable, which got me thinking 1) am I doing this right? and 2) why bother?

Just curious as to what others do and what results it achieves really.

I just realised I should have put this in production techniques, but in the words of sickle, f**k it.

dont understand what you mean here...do you mean "it DOESNT seem audibly noticable"?
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good

oops, yes, sorry  I'll correct that...

what host?

cubarse. I see the events move, but because the amount of offset is so tiny, it doesn't seem to make a lot of odds...

does cubase allow you to "capture" a groove from an audio or midi file?

thats one of the main ways I use groove quantizing. In reason, for example, I can load in a REX'ed drum break, "capture its groove" and apply that to my bass line. That in combination with sidechain compressing the bassline with the kick can really lock in a groove.

Its very late here in LA so I'll make an example for you tomorrow if you like.

In it's own convoluted way, yes.

not that I'm aware of in my cheapo version. are you suggesting that the best results could be had from say 'nicking' the groove from a drumloop and applying that to other stuff so it all still kinda lines up? sorry if I'm being a bit thick...

Do you have the "Auto" box checked?

I can't see one, bear in mind it's actually Cubasis not proper grown ups Cubase. I get offered quantizing types such as 16th shuffle, 8th shuffle etc and also a Groove Control box that seems to do something similar.

that would be very kind of you. if possible can you show a before and after so I can hear the difference. thanks for your help.

Might also be worth noting that I program my own beats instead of using loops, so I guess I'm kind of looking for a bit of guidance on what things to try and what results I might expect...:)

Post

ya man, I'll do a before and after...no problemo.
Doesnt matter whether you program or sample, the ideas the same.

It may not be in cubasis.
This may sound obvious but you do have the notes selected? In cubase the quantise only works on the selected notes (in key edit) or parts (in project view).

Post

yeah I do have the notes selected. Like I say, I can see that they have moved afterwards, just doesn't seem to sound much different, which leads me back to the question of what am I trying to achieve? I just realise that having everything rigidly on 16ths may be holding me back a bit. What do you do?
