i'm 42, i saw the melvins twice, i like that they can do the noise thing and such, but "stoner witch" was my favorite...i agree with you, just not so intense... i never liked rem much but now i sing along to "the one i love" as loud and on pitch as i can in the car to show my kids what good music is all about, somewhat ego, the same with that nirvana song" i wish i was like you...easily amused"...i honestly only know them from the radio/mtv but that was enough... my wife had a few cd's also, heard them... i really have nothing but respect for them...i was really just trying to make the point that the who used to make some very good music quite awhile back...i do understand your point also i think, btwherodotus wrote:Dude, I am an old man.ross g wrote:
i'd have to say, i have an old cassette copy of "meaty big & bouncy", something like that, by the Who, don't even know where i got it, and i'm blown away how well it stands up for lyrics, subject matter, melody, song structure, DRUMMING, POWER CHORDS, etc.... nirvana didn't start "good" rock 'n roll...
just a thought...

The Who, Led Zep, Cream and the Yardbirds were my teething music.
What gets me about Kurt isn't his talent per se, but the way that such intense melodic talent shone through in such a non melodic context. I mean, I LOVE the Melvins, but 'melodic' in the usual sense they aren't.
(EDIT) the way he did that leadbelly tune, you can tell that guy "got it"... he was a very good song writer, not trying to take that away....
EDIT i forgot one of my main points, nirvana, ie kurt cobain is all about the song/melody from what i hear...there is a nod to punk/noise and such but the guy was obviously trying to write SONGS, i think it set him apart from his peers.... i read the book "come as you are", my wifes, it seems he wanted to be more "punk rock" than he actually was (in the music sense)...the world is better for it, but not him, obviously....
only opinions... rg

Oh, and have you heard that trilogy that the Melvins did on Ipecac records?
That album, "The Maggot" is on my all time top 10. Don't know why, but I just seem to end up listening to it over and over again.
And yeah, "Stoner Witch" is another great. That and "Stag" are the only major label releases of theirs that I know.
I get the feeling they were trying to piss off the A and R guys on purpose.

3 tablespoons

fair enough, obviously i'm a big nirvana fan and i can't agree with you more about the comments on their music. "Journals" and his other writings are certainly interesting, but I wouldn't have bothered to read them in the first place if i didn't like Cobain's music.herodotus wrote:...
I am sorry, but though his 'journals' interest me, it is his Melodies that I love more than any words he may have written.
I think he was the finest melodist that ever played in a band with that kind of power chord simplicity. His best have the timeless quality of a folk tune, or a spirtual or gregorian chant.
It's humbling.
beside the incredible melodies Cobain came up with, I think he was an amazing performer as well. I have never seen/heard a band doing a nirvana cover that does justice to the songs. I think he really took 'power chord simplicity' to another level - as well as in terms of how these simple things were used in his songs, the way these things were played to deliver the impact was spot on, and of course, his singing really suit the songs too.
Another thing that I've always loved about Nirvana and Cobain's song writing is the efficiency of their song writing - there never seem to be anything 'unnecessary' included in their song structure/instumental parts and so on.
anyway, could probably go on forever on their music but i'll stop here since this is not exactly 'nirvana appreciation thread'

ALL ROCK...the second time was 1st set total noise, second set noise/some rock, 3rd set THE ROCK... but it didn't match the all lights on trying to impress the dweebs pure fuckin' rock those guys are more than capable of....

In this context, a dining establishment. It used to have country coolness, but they moved into a new building just a couple hundred feet from the old one. Now the old building contains "Klara's Kitchun." =9_9= These days the waitresses at Brock's wear fake "formalwear" and don't say "Whatcha want t'day, Hun?" *sigh* But the food's the same. Yum.what's ahem "joint" mean
A joint is also a hunka hunka smokin' pork, uh hunh, thankewverramudge. :-) (Or some other meat.)

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
