I always thought maybe this just might work:

Make a "warez" for your own software but put a horrible virus in it that will make the user have to reformat after a week. Then share this "warez" on every p2p site and torrent site out there?

Last time I saw something like that mentioned, it was quickly replied by saying it's illegal and would only lead the developer or whoever concocted such a 'warez' version into problems.

I'm pretty sure Rich has put up warezed versions of ORION that have deliberate blue-screen bugs, or else he has done somethign tha causes cracked versions to do it. He denies it of course but there is a disproportionately high number of dodgy users who appear at the Synapse forums trying to find out why it crashes all the time on them.

i suppose one could try a less aggressive type of planted warez.

one that looks for all the world to be the real deal, that uses the naming conventions of the popular crack organizations, has their standard read-me text file, and even shows their signature opening screens upon the install...then simply fails. no damage to the users computer, no crashes, nothing tricky installed, no retaliation. it just looks real, starts up like a real crack, then closes.

perhaps if devs leaked this sort of thing out, every once in a while updating it to follow the current naming and visual conventions, perhaps that would at least help people in search of the crack end up with the wrong one frequently enough that some wouldnt bother persuing it any further?

I have an even better suggestion:

A computer programmer (who is anti-warez) could create a virus design specially to hunt down the databanks/signals of all the underground crackwarez organizations and just wipe out their systems forever.

Good Idea, right?

Imageline used to have a form of "warez detection" at their website -- warez users would get their .flp files deleted upon entering fruityloops.com.
