i'm searching for a simple compressor plugin with sidechain for a pumping sound. must not be a professional one. i think the compressor of reason is a nice one although there's no sidechain function.

Kjaerhus audio GUP is simple, has sidechain and sounds great.

why don't you want a *proffesional* one - did you by any chance mean it shouldn't be *commercial* ?
if so - freebee:

or - affordable one:
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1190.html
which supports sidechain as well (there's older version in the database)

Hi,
Have a look at:
otiumFX COMPADRE beatpuncher (VST/PC)
- External key Sidechaining.
- Sidechain filtering.
- Great sound with unique character; decribed by users to provide "organic pumping", "powerful punch", "movement" and "attitude".
- Dry/wet control for parallel compression.
- Easy serial compression to add extra crunch.
- Built-in limiter.
- Stereo & mono versions.
- Very reasonable pricing: $ 49.00
Best regards,
Rune

can someone explain the meaning of "sidechain"? I've never understood it! (I figured I would when I need to)

With a "regular" compressor the signal that you want to compress is controlling the compressor. If you are compressing a drum, if the drums volume goes above a preselected volume the compressor will be triggered.
With sidechain the compressor is set to work on the drum, but the compressor will be controlled and triggered by another instrument such as the bass. So, when the bass plays a note the compressor will lower the drum volume.

the best simple compressor imo (sorry windows only) is voxengos crunchessor, it has side chain, it's priced right, and Aleksey keeps up with it at breakneck speed (as he does with all his pluggins). Though I use Crunchessor with drums primarily last night I discovered the benefits of using it on my guitar...

Older DX 64bit plug with external sidechain for ducking. Cheap enough, easy to set up and not a bad sound if you are not needing the heavy smash and pump type response of vintage variable gain elements.

And talking of DB Audio....there's always the soon-to-be-released version2 of QuantumFX. Sidechaining is going to be a feature, alongside no doubt, lots of other tasty FX. So you could patch up a simple compressor (no doubt there'll be a preset anyway) and it means you'll also be able to patch some more fancy sidechain compressors. I would imagine it'll be possible to patch up something like a 3-band multiband sidechaining comp. Which could make for some weird FX.
Or even a sidechaining brickwall limiter - that could do some damage. Or a sidechaining Eq. Not sure yet what it'll be able to do, but if v1 is anything to go by, v2 will be capable of all manner of weirdness.
