I've never been able to do anything particularly well when I was taking anything so I can't imagine I'd write music particularly well on anything :| Richard James (Aphex Twin) said he did drugs for mind expansion, but not for writing music.

On the other hand, I saw some artists who'd done some artwork while under the influence of drugs in some free magazine I picked up. The first two didn't like the results (couldn't concentrate, mostly bizarre scribblings) but the guy who did acid said he really liked what he did, he managed to sharpen up his style and do things he wouldn't normally.

Drug effects vary from mind to mind, so you can only answer your question by trying them yourself.

For me (or any of my friends), drugs (not even cannabis) and the actual process of making music don't match. Even playing hand drums gets difficult, I find it harder to reach the mental state/groove/it/whatchacallit under influence than when sober.

Furthermore, proper mushrooms and acid at adequate doses alter vision - looking at a rolling sequencer screen with jumping volume meters and all those wonderful colours... it's fun but quite impossible to make any real sense. I once spent over half an hour looking for the volume slider on Winamp while on acid (ok, it was a weird skin) but had to give up :D

Stay clear of the stronger psychedelics if you keep bats on your attic, even baby bats, if you're tired or you have taken other substances, especially amphetamines. Even bad trips are good experiences, but you don't ever want to forget why you are tripping.

drugs kill creativity. My music was more psychedelic and just more melodic when i was clean.

the_nihilist wrote:Since there seems to always be a discussed link with musical talent and psychadelic hallucinogens, it begs the question as to whether they do have an effect on the music that one makes. Can anyone with experience comment on the pros and cons of taking hallucinogenic drugs? Did your perception of music change after a hallucinogenic experience? And possibly most important, assuming that psychadelic drugs do have an effect, which ones are most conductive to establishing a different musical paradigm?

back in the early 70's we experimented with lsd but it was more a spiritual searching for us, I think it helped me think outside the box but I never played when tripping.
I often needed grass or beer or both to think I could write better but often found rambling notes which under the influence were masterpieces only to find rambling notes.
These days I use neither grass or beer to fuel my creativity but I do find, after working hard on a song to catch a bit of a buzz to relax and enjoy music.

does this help any?

hallucinogenic drugs are great in moderation separated from music making. I've been very happy with my writing about times when I was on shrooms, acid, hell even dope. To actually try and write while on the various substances is another story. It's never as good as it seems. I believe Braj mentioned dope as the best drug to play on live. I would have to totally disagree. I thought I was playing great and really rocking out. But upon hearing the tapes later, it became painfully obvious that I was behind the beat and just plain awful at times. Long times holding one chord letting it drone. But at least I didnt fall asleep up there.
In my opinion, the only drug that is good for using with the intention to make music is pot. It doesnt make you so f**ked up that you cant function and it helps me come at things from an angle that I never would've tried otherwise. Especially when improvising.

dunno bout where you are mate but pot n dope are the same thing here :)

I was standing out back of the club Friday night with my guitarist. He offered me a hit off his pipe..I eyed it with a longing, but I knew better. I can not play worth a f**k if I'm stoned ; I lose my whole musical sense.
Jamming around at home while I'm high may be ok, but if I'm out playing live I need all my sense and skills to keep from making an ass out of myself. You can only use the line 'hey I meant to play it like that ' once.
:hihi:

Sorry, guess that could all be confusing then. In my neck of the woods we call heroin dope.
