Does anyone here know if the GM Module that is in FL Studio was developed by Image-Line? And, does this thing load as a VST or is it some type of proprietary FL Plug? Not the sound font player, mind, the GM Module.
I've got a programmer that wants to license or buy a version outright.
If not that, does anyone know a product along the same lines as Virtual Sound Canvas (not so pricey and out of date though.) There could be some interest for a Sound Font player as well, but that's up in the air at this point. What we're really looking for is a module though.

GM Module? There's no GM Module in FL Studio is there? Are you talking about Fruity LSD? Afaik that only uses your soundcards GM and doesn't generate anything itself.

Hrmph. Maybe you're right. I loads in the effects chain doesn't it. I assumed it was something more than that. And yes, I'm talking about Fruity LSD.
Side note, does this allow you to record GM sounds? I never tried it.

it would appear you are correct Programentalist...you learn something new everyday....

Both Awave Studio and Extreme Sample Converter can convert GM soundfonts to .dls (DownLoadable Sounds) files.FL Studio Help File wrote:Fruity LSD wraps the functionality of the DirectMusic software synthesizer to FL Studio and provides 16 MIDI instruments with an option to import DLS level 1 banks.
By default, Fruity LSD uses the Roland GM/GS Sound Set (which is default for the DirectMusic synthesizer as well and is usually located in "<windows directory>/System32/GM.DLS").

Are there any alternatives that are actually GM Modules besides Sound Canvas?
I wonder what kind of development time is in something like this and if any of the whizbang programmers here would be interested in creating one for licensing or for sale.
I see the actual sounds as being the prohibitive factor here.

No go. We're looking for an out of the box solution that works just like onboard GM but can be recorded through the VST host. That's why the FL thing caught my eye. It seemed to load as a VSTi and contained all the sounds, so I thought that it was similar to what we wanted. Looks like its not.
The problem with Soundfont players is that you have to load the patches like a sample player. So you can't load a 'bank' and it just switch to the instrument you want using program changes just like working inside GM normally. That's why I like the FL thing, because it works exactly this way.
Is Sound Canvas the only one?

yeah there are hundreds of gm soundfonts. but if you are looking to licence one, it will be pretty tricky because most of those fonts have been cobbled together from tons of different sources - copyright will be really murky.

I don't understand. sfx is a VSTi. You can change programs all day long in FLS using automation. You can also change programs directly through MIDI. Once you load the soundfont, it will stay loaded when you save the FLS project and open it later. When you export the project as a wave or mp3, the soundfont sounds will be rendered.Joseph Burrell wrote:No go. Do you want to change soundfonts in the middle of a song?

But there's still no built in bank. Does sfz respond like built in GM does? you load one GM bank and through program changes (ie: 71 for flute) it knows which patch you want for that track. And each track can be sent through the same instance of sfz? That's not how I visualize sfz working. Maybe OmniSynth, I don't know for sure until I investigate it further.
